April Snow

Mon, 24 Oct 2005, 11:35 pm

April Snow, the new Korean movie starring Bae Yong Joon and Son Ye-Jin, will be released in Malaysian cinemas this Thursday…can’t wait! After years and years of never having a crush on any Asian actor, I’m totally enthralled by Bae Yong Joon after watching him in Winter Sonata (big huge cry-fest…the theme song can still make me cry…even now!). So am I eagerly awaiting April Snow because of him? Hell, yes!!

If you are also a fan, feast your eyes on this (downloaded from the above website). By the way, the soundtrack is out…hubby bought it for me yesterday…=)) The theme song is so lovely in a sad sad way….ohhhh…can’t wait!!

A(?!?!) Sound of Thunder. Just one?

Hubby and I watched the above movie on Wednesday night at GSC Midvalley. Though I really wouldn’t dignify it with the term ‘movie’.

Why did we choose it, then? Well, we were at Midvalley on Tuesday evening, and since there weren’t many new shows to watch, we decided to watch this one cause the poster looked interesting. We managed to get really good seats, furthermore, the show was being shown in cinema #12…the big one! So I was quite excited…it has been some time since we went for a movie, and this one looked like a good action/thriller (contrary to what you may think, there are girls that like action movies, yah!), and we get to leave work early cause it was our take-a-break day (we get to leave 1 hour earlier than usual!).

Well, the first sign that it was going to be a sucky movie was the review I read in Star Online on Wednesday morning. But since I was in a particularly optimistic mood, I decided to ignore the review…I mean, it’s usually based on personal opinions, right? (And so is this post, by the way…).

The second sign that we shouldn’t have gone for the movie was the massive jam from the office all the way to Midvalley (well, I took it as a sign)…but still we presevered.

Of course, we arrived late, plus we had to ta-pau dinner to sneak into the cinema (hubby bought 1901 hot dogs, I bought the crispy popiah…love ‘em!). Third sign that I should’ve just gone straight home was me feeling extremely nauseous due to the start-stop motion of the car during the jam, compounded by hunger pangs. But nooooo..I sat my butt down on seat E12…just in time to see Sir Ben Kingsley looking very very tanned in a orangey sorta way, with a god-awful hair-do. Hmm…sign #4??

Well, to cut a long story short…it totally sucked. It couldn’t have sucked any better. It was the king and queen of sucky shows. Everything mentioned in the Star Online review?

“The bad effects are immediately obvious in the opening moments when an allosaurus knocks over some pretty stiff-looking trees and menaces a group of time-travellers.” (It literally looked like those amusement park rides where you sit in a moving boat or mine barrow or something and the fake trees fake-fall on you…) - CHECK.

“It doesnâ??Ã?ôt get any better when the scene shifts to the present and actors are plonked into the foreground of poorly executed futuristic street scenes.” (Even fake studio backgrounds for wedding photos look more real) - CHECK.

“Stupid Question #1: If they keep returning to the same point in time, wouldnâ??Ã?ôt they encounter the previous hunters who were there? The fact that this doesnâ??Ã?ôt happen makes the ending kind of absurd.” (Loopholes galore…) - CHECK.

“Stupid Question #2: If the whole area is about to become a red-hot lava bed, whatâ??Ã?ôs the big deal about not killing anything else in the vicinity?” (More loopholes…) - CHECK.

(SPOILER AHEAD…but then again, if you’re smarter than us…you probably wouldn’t watch this movie anyways…)
“If youâ??Ã?ôve already watched the trailer, then you know the dopey hunter stepped on a butterfly â??Ã?ì so much for the whole â??Ã?úbig mysteryâ??Ã?ù subplot of the movie.” (The butterfly looked weird…and hubby brought up a good point…if the volcano was going to explode anyways, and kill everything in sight, why would killing the butterfly change anything? Oh wait…unless the butterfly wasn’t killed in the hot spot that it was suppose to die in…*smacks head*) - CHECK.

“Along the way, they do stupid things like step on unknown foliage, fail to put on their seatbelts and venture into flooded sewers where giant undulating things dwell.” (Ah…the usual Hollywood ploy to kill off one character at a time…) - CHECK.

So there you have it…the recipe for the worst movie in the year. No…wait…make that probably the worst movie I’ve ever watched. Ever.

And the title! What sound of thunder? Where? Why “A” sound of thunder? Why just one sound of thunder? Why not more? Why didn’t lightning just strike down the producer and director of this show for actually daring to make it in the first place?!?

Official report from Star Online

PM’s wife dies after bout with breast cancer

From The Star Newsdesk

PUTRAJAYA: The Prime Minister’s wife Datin Seri Endon Mahmood died at 7.55 am today at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Putrajaya after fighting a long battle with cancer.

Endon, 64, breathed her last about 18 days after returning from undergoing a treatment for breast cancer in Los Angeles, United States.

She is survived by two children.

Thousands of Malaysians started paying their last respects at Seri Perdana from 11am through the main gate of the official residence.

VIPs and foreign dignitaries started to pay their last respects at Sri Perdana at 9.30 am. Among the earliest to arrive, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar was seen busy managing the situation.

Her remains will be brought to the Putrajaya Mosque for funeral prayers during Asar, before being laid to rest at the Muslim burial grounds at Precinct 20, Putrajaya.

Abdullah and her son Kamaluddin and his daughter Nori, daughter and son in laws, Azrene Abdullah and Khairy Jamaluddin respectively, the premier’s four grandchildren who are Kamaluddin’s children, were by Endon’s side before she breathed her last.

Endon’s mother Datin Mariam Abdullah was also present.

As a mark of respect, Several Cabinet Ministers including Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Information Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir cancelled all their official functions.

Among others, the official launch of the national jersey for the SEA Games, scheduled to be officiated by the deputy premier, had been called off.

News of Endon’s sudden death at the break of dawn shocked the nation, with Malaysians from all walks of life mourning the loss of the premier’s wife.

Reflecting the atmosphere of grief and sorrow, the weather in the Klang Valley also greeted the day with gloom.

Radio and television stations switched to low gear by playing songs which depict the sombre mood and verses from the holy Quran. Muslim radio deejays also called on listeners to offer the AlFatihah verse to Endon.

Senior government officers including secretariesgeneral and directorsgeneral based in Putrajaya also rushed to Seri Perdana to pay their last respects.

Members of the public started converging in Seri Perdana ahead of visiting hours at 11 am. Also present were Minister of Agriculture and AgroBased Industry Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, Minister of Higher Education Datuk Dr Mohd Shafie Salleh and former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Musa Hitam.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were seen arriving at Seri Perdana at about 10.30 am.

Shortly after, the Prime Minister, who appeared in blue Malay traditional dress, was seen receiving visitors who came to pay their last respects at the premier’s official residence.

Abdullah, who appeared composed at first, could not hold back his tears when several visitors expressed their heartfelt condolences by lending their shoulders to the bereaved premier. He was later seen having some moments with Najib and Syed Hamid.

According to one of his aides, Abdullah who was by his wife’s side, appeared calm when Endon breathed her last. Immediately, the premier began making preparations for her burial.

At the Parliament building, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Ramli Ngah Talib announced Endon’s death at the start of today’s sitting at 10 am before adjourning the meeting to Monday.

I felt like crying while reading the online news reports. I think almost all of us Malaysians know how much our Prime Minister loves his wife. My heart goes out to him and his family.
