Movie review: The 3rd Generation

I had rather high expectations for this show…after all, the trailer looked pretty good, and the storyline sounded interesting. But when I left the cinema this afternoon, I was…well, disappointed isn’t really the correct word to use. Amused is more like it. Though others might not have felt the same…hehe…cause throughout the show (not all the seats were filled), at least three couples walked out halfway, and one fell asleep. I started fidgeting halfway throughout the show…though we did stay till the end (and had a good laugh after!).
[Spoiler ahead]
The show was extremely draggy. Slower than a tortoise, in fact. Maybe I’m just not arty-farty enough for these type of shows. The characters spent alot of time posing for the camera, I couldn’t understand the whole point of the story, and the main character, Charlie, is such a bastard for cheating on his wife that he should’ve been left bankrupt at the end of the show. It’s just all very…pretentious? Sigh. And my god…the word draggy doesn’t do it justice. The conversations between Charlie and Linda was so long drawn out that you could go out, buy another drink, come back in and they wouldn’t have finished their sentence yet. Ok, perhaps I’m exaggerating…but here’s an example…:
Charlie: “Youuuu………………………………………………………….(rest of sentence forgotten)”
Linda: “I…………………………………………………………..(rest of sentence forgotten)”
Of course, it was alot funnier when spoken in Cantonese. Hehe…and the minute we stepped out of the cinema, hubby and I laughed non-stop while imitating their conversation. Hence…amused.
And what’s with all the reference to the number 3? Yes, I know it’s the 3rd generation, blablabla…but seriously…the clocks show 3 o’ clock most of the time, a company expands from 3 people to 30 people…I can’t remember what else. But it’s hilarious when you see the clock at 3pm, then you see Linda leave the office, then Charlie leave the office, then Linda comes back to the office…and the damn clock is still at 3pm! What gives??
While the background and costumes were gorgeous (although the characters recycled the costumes so often that I really wonder if they had a budgeting problem while filming…), I personally wouldn’t recommend this show. However, if you’re going with the sole purpose to see Carmen Soo and Amber Chia…then do go…they look gorgeous (Carmen Soo more than Amber Chia though…)…=)
The saving grace for this show is the theme song, sung by Nicholas Teo (Charlie). Love it love it!
