Merdeka Day excursion

Thu, 31 Aug 2006, 04:54 pm

After only 5 hours of sleep, I woke up at 6.30am to get ready for our mini-photography excursion to the National Monument (Tugu Negara) and Lake Gardens with the husband, M & ES. Luckily, we’d packed most of the important stuff (read: Coke and Mentos) the night before, so we didn’t have to rush in the morning.

Without the usual rush-hour traffic jam, it only took us 10 minutes to get from our place to Jalan Parliament! Now, if only every day would be like this…!

Pics taken at the National Monument [Click the thumbnail to enlarge]:

The day remained cloudy and overcast as we headed on to the Lake Gardens. Surprisingly, there were quite alot of cars there, and the playground was overflowing with screaming kids and tired looking parents! We finally found a place to park, took a long walk over to the lake, and found a picnic table at a not-so-busy area of the park. Save for another two tables of picnic-kers, we were all clear to test the C+M experiment! But first, breakfast! M & ES brought along packets of Nasi Lemak, while I’d prepared ham and salami sandwiches the night before, so we munched on those to fill our growling tummies.

Finally, it was time! Amidst much laughter and debates about how much Mentos to use, etc….we finally set up experiment #1: Half a tube of Mentos + using the bottle cap with a small hole drilled in it:

We weren’t too pleased with the results as the ‘geyser’ didn’t go up as high as promised by the website…hence experiment #2: Half a tube of Mentos + no bottle cap:

With both experiments being dismal failures, we kept our fingers crossed as we used up our last supplies of Coke and Mentos for experiment #3: A full tube of Mentos + bottle cap. Result!

Satisfied, we cleared the stuff up and began our long walk back to the car park. Along the way, we made a quick stop at the children’s playground for some good-ol’-fashioned ice-cream on a stick…and saw the first prototype of Osim’s iGallop!

Oh yes, I *did* take photos of the surroundings as well…*grin*

To future C+M experiments…10 bottles next time, ‘k, M? =)

hey girl, i like ur new blog! so easy to navigate and browse thru pics (very nice pics too). and it’s pink! loves it!

where’d you guys get the coke and mentos idea from? so cool.

erm…..how embarassing it is to say this, but i’ve never seen our national monument before (i mean, not counting pictures and all). hehe….

Hah! Didn’t I say to actually pilot the experiment first? This way we can analyse the pressure generated from a single mentos as well as the flowrate and all. But no one listens!

Goodness, the both of you are commenting at the same time!

Pixelator: Right. Flow-rate. Oooookkkk. Come on…imagine if we put ONE Mentos in to a cup of Coke…that’ll probably be like…”blurp…blurp…*fizzles out*”.

And I happen to like that slide photo alot, k?

Mvo: Hah…just remember *who* he was laughing at, ya! And ahem…I’m also looking forward to your blog…*taps foot impatiently*. Want me to help you with the templates, etc.?

boo_licious: Hiya! Thanks for visiting…=) Surprisingly, the area around Tugu Negara is really clean…no signs of littering, etc…which is honestly unusual for M’sia!

Something to say?
