The Banquet

Sumptious costumes, a period drama, my favourite Chinese actress, Zhang Ziyi and a love story. Too bad the show was just this side of draggy. It was like watching a beautifully choreographed ballet. At half the speed. It got abit exciting towards the end, though…but be warned…you’ll have to sit through two hours before reaching the last somewhat exciting 10 minutes :-)

Zhang Ziyi as Empress Wan is superb…I love the way she subtly uses her eyes to convey her feelings. And the script…I couldn’t understand a word at all (thank god for English subtitles!) but something about the way they say it, or the pronounciation…it just sounds like poetry. And I particularly love the scene where Empress Wan tells Wu Luan…”Using a mask to hide your expression isn’t the highest form of art. The highest form of art is turning your face into a mask”. Ok, it just doesn’t sound that good in plain old English. And the grandeur of the sets and the costumes…how absolutely gorgeous. It just made me want to live in that era just to experience how it feels.

Fans of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hero will love this one. Just be forewarned…it really is a slow slow show. And remember to bring a pillow to sit on…my butt ached like crazy halfway throughout the show!

haha…that’s the first time i’ve heard it referred that way! but junk is right…i mean, it’s extra fats, no use whatsoever other than to provide some padding. anyways, the junk in my trunk is growing…how come exercising isn’t helping at all?!?
