Trick or treat

Tue, 31 Oct 2006, 10:22 pm

For the first time ever, we just got trick or treat-ed!

I was surfing the net and hubby was reading the newspaper when the doorbell rang 10 minutes ago. I walked out to see hubby looking baffled as well…we usually don’t get unannounced guests and we just paid the newspaperman not too long ago…

I tip-toed to the door and peered through the eyehole and saw two kids wearing this…

Elizabeth I

Synopsis from HBO’s homepage:
Emmy-winner Helen Mirren and Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons star in Elizabeth I, a two-part HBO Films miniseries event that explores the intersection of the private and public life of Elizabeth I (Mirren) in the latter half of her reign, offering a personal look at her allies, her enemies and her suitors as she struggled to survive in a male-dominated world. Part 1 explores the middle-aged Elizabeth’s tempestuous relationship with the Earl of Leicester (Irons) as it survives a French suitor, war, treason, and illness. Part 2 follows Elizabeth through her later years, during which she had an equally passionate affair with the young, ambitious Earl of Essex (Hugh Dancy), who had been raised, ironically, by his stepfather Leicester.

Elizabeth I sheds light on both the personal and public side of England’s most enigmatic queen. The daughter of King Henry VIII, Elizabeth I (1533-1603) reunited a nation divided by religious strife, faced down the Spanish Armada and, after an unprecedented 45-year reign, died one of England’s best-loved monarchs. During her time as Queen, poets and playwrights wrote about her, artists painted her, and composers dedicated works to her, all contributing to the legend of the “Virgin Queen” who never married. In the public’s mind, Elizabeth’s romantic life is nearly completely overshadowed by her political achievements and military triumphs. Elizabeth I looks beyond the myth at the woman behind the crown, striking a balance between the queen’s desire to find love and passion, and her responsibility to the monarchy.

****************************************

Personally, I’ve always been fascinated with enigmatic Elizabeth I ever since I first watched the movie Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett (which apparently was a very inaccurate film!)…and when I read that a miniseries about her has been filmed, I excitedly awaited the DVD to appear on the shelves of my usual DVD shop.

While at times, I felt that the Virgin Queen appeared a little too human in the show, all in all, I found it to be a brilliant film. Helen Mirren is perfect as Queen Elizabeth…the subtle lift of an eyebrow, the steely glint in her eyes, her quick change in moods…what an amazing actress! And Jeremy Irons as Robert Dudley is oh-so-sexy (yes, I have a thing for older, sexy men who speak with a British or Scottish accent…eg. Sean Connery…*grin*)…you can almost imagine him as a roguish gentleman in his younger days! Hugh Dancy, who plays the Earl of Essex, portrays the hot-headed ‘little boy’ well, torn between rebelling vs. being ruled by the queen he professes to love. And needless to say, the costumes and script is outstanding…especially the script! I absolutely adored the wordplay and the speeches!

It’s a good thing that this show was filmed as a 2-part miniseries instead of a 2-hour movie. The show had so much more details about Queen Elizabeth’s life as a miniseries than it would’ve had as a movie. And the gory scenes would’ve never passed the M’sian censors as a movie! And gory scenes they are! The era where Queen Elizabeth ruled had it’s fair share of violence…after all, the queen’s own mother, Anne Boleyn, was beheaded by the King…and while most shows would tastefully avoid showing too much graphic detail, this show does not shy away from it. It was quite unexpected to see a show that actually depicts traitors being drawn, hung and quartered…but you’ll see it here. And the beheading of Mary, Queen of Scots, will leave you with your mouth hanging wide open (though do keep in mind that in real life, her beheading was much worse than that depicted in the film)!

This film truly shows how hard it is to be a ruler of a country…torn between responsibility to her country vs. responsibility to her heart…and you truly feel for a queen who seem to have everything yet nothing. Again, my only complaint is that there were scenes where the queen was too open with her feelings…it just doesn’t seem believeable as you’d think that monarchs, especially during those uncertain times (and especially Elizabeth, who had to be careful for most of her young life to not be seen or heard plotting against her half-sister Queen Mary), would keep their feelings more in check. And I suppose there are those little historical inaccuracies, but then again, this is a film to entertain, not to teach. Garnering 9 awards in the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, this is one must-watch show for lovers of historical dramas.

It can’t get any worse…(but let’s not tempt fate shall we?)

Mon, 30 Oct 2006, 09:38 pm

Tossed and turned last night.

Woke up at 6am, couldn’t go back to sleep.

Was grumpier than usual in the morning…yes, that’s actually possible.

Had horrible stomach aches (note the ‘S’) throughout the morning no thanks to the few spoonfuls of Haagen Daz Macadamia Brittle from last night (I turned lactose-intolerant overnight, but that’s another story for another day).

Work. ‘Nuff said.

Monday after a week of holidays.

Not very tasty buns for lunch.

Got some really sad news about a friend.

Felt feverish in the evening.

Found out that an apartment that I really really liked has just been sold.

BLACKOUT when I got back home…while halfway watching Winter Sonata and waiting for ANTM.

Someone seems to have had a bad day as well.

Anyone else?

Saturday passed by all too quickly

Sun, 29 Oct 2006, 03:19 pm

…partially because I practically slept through the whole day (got up at 11am, went back to sleep at 2pm, woke up at 5pm). Yes, I’m a lazy pig…*oink oink*

We had dinner with Lamb and Mr. Lamb and SharryBerry (Corny couldn’t make it coz he had a family dinner thingy to attend). After picking SharryBerry up, we made our way down to Deutsches Gasthaus (seriously impossible to spell!) at Changkat Bukit Bintang. Venue was chosen because the restaurant was having a promotion for Oktoberfest. For drinks, hubby, Mr. Lamb and SharryBerry ordered Paulaner beer, while Lamb and myself went for fruit juices. As for mains, the girls all ordered sausages, while the macho males went for the pork knuckles.

While waiting for the food to arrive, we helped ourselves to the very limited salad bar (1 serving each only!)…which on hindsight, turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the mains were huge! Especially the pork knuckles! And both times, the waiter placed the pork knuckles in the middle of the table instead of infront of the guys…I think people usually order it to share…haha… :-) But kudos on the guys for polishing off at least 90% of the meat! I personally found the food to be pretty decent…though nothing to shout about. Anyways, I’ll let the pictures do the talking…

*******************************************************

After dinner, Corny called to ask if we were going anywhere for drinks, so we decided to meet him at Souled Out. As usual, Souled Out was packed, and we ended up playing musical tables for awhile before finally settling on a table outdoors. As we were all still full from dinner, we just ordered drinks and chit-chatted till almost midnight. Actually, chit-chat isn’t the appropriate word…what us three girls actually did was to interrogate Corny on an interesting development in his life…*grin* Yeah, damn eight, I know. And Corny surprisingly did not buckle under the pressure and handled our questions like a seasoned-pro! Coupled with some unexpected and funny one-liners from Mr. Lamb and hubby, it was one interesting conversation indeed! After awhile, we got tired of kacau-ing him and moved on to other topics which ended up with Corny speaking like P. Diddy (or is it just Diddy now?)…complete with hand actions, yo! That had us literally in tears!! :-)

We finally called it a night, but not before we egged Corny into taking part in Souled Out’s promo thingy where you put your hand into a container full of creepy crawlies to get a voucher for some freebies. Poor guy, getting bullied by us the whole night…heh!

By the time we got home, it was past midnight…and whaddaya know, Saturday’s over… :-(

In the still of the night

Sat, 28 Oct 2006, 12:40 am

Not!

I’m being serenaded by the “vroom vroom” sound of hubby playing Project Gotham Racing on his Xbox360!

Nevertheless, I love nights…even with the background *music* of the Xbox, I can still feel the peacefulness and stillness of this time of the day. It calms me, and I feel more awake even though physically, I’m already worn out…if that makes any sense at all.

I’m not a morning person…AO, my ex-colleague, can attest to that. She used to sit in the cubicle near me, and I must’ve looked extremely grumpy every morning…coz till now, she still tells me that I’m not a morning person… :-) But yeah, I know I’m not. I hate getting up early…absolutely detest it. And I suppose it takes me longer than most people to get my engine started in the mornings, so to speak, so I usually get over my morning grumpiness by lunch time. But then, I have lunch…and then I start to feel sleepy in the afternoons which leads to me getting grumpy again…so if you think about it, I’m grumpy the whole day through work! Hah! Grumpy and grouchy.

Anyways…night time. That’s when I’m the happiest. I can easily stay up till the wee hours of the morning doing stuff. And Friday nights are just the best! You have Saturday and Sunday to look forward to, the weekend feels as if it’ll stretch on forever…

*yawn*

Off to search for something to munch…
