The Devil Wears Prada

After two consecutive weekends of having to be somewhere else and not being able to make it to a pre-agreed movie outing with the girls, I finally finally got to watch this movie tonight with hubby. *squeals with glee*

And I so absolutely loved it!!!

While the movie deviates somewhat from the book, on this rare occasion, I actually prefer the movie to the book. While lots of details got left out, it somehow didn’t matter that much, as the essence of who Miranda Priestly is was captured and acted out so perfectly by Meryl Streep that I’ve gotta say she stole the show. Her, and the gorgeous gorgeous clothes and accessories.

First off…the clothes! The jackets, the skirts, the dresses, the bags, the jewelry, the shoes, the luxury brands, the everything! I want to look and dress like Andrea Sachs (post makeover, of course!). To be so pretty and chic. To look like I’ve just stepped out of a magazine. *hyperventilates* I want I want I want!

And Miranda Priestly. Wow. Meryl Streep got that role down pat. That LOOK, the soft yet disapproving voice (she never raises her voice, but that soft tone is scarier than if she’d screamed the house down), the dismissive ‘That’s all.’…she reminds me of someone *some of us* know…hehe… :-) But the thing I like about the movie was that at the end, she reminded all of us that no matter how strong some women can be (and bitchy at times), they are human after all. Her performance was captivating and absolutely convincing. Absolutely love her in this movie.

As for Anne Hathaway…I think she is a great choice for Andy Sachs. Her transformation from college-preppy, girl-off-the-street to haute-couture-clothes-hanger is absolutely believeable, and in Paris, she looked as if she absolutely belonged there with the chic clothes and eyeliner-rimmed eyes. She is soooo pretty! And I like how they changed her character from the book slightly. In the book, I found her to be mean-spirited in some parts, but in the movie, she’s portrayed as someone who got a job she didn’t want, tried her best, tried to juggle between her job and her boyfriend and at the end of the day, stood up for what she believed in.

I also love Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. Emily, who played Miranda’s first assistant (also named Emily) was hilariously funny with her one-liners and somewhat bitchy attitude and looks. Brilliant! And while Stanley Tucci’s portrayal of Nigel was not what I’d imagined Nigel would be when I read the book, I still loved him in this show for his dapper looks, witty comebacks and spot-on comic timing.

This is one of the best shows I’ve seen in ages. I can’t remember ever liking a show so much…even the ones that I liked somehow had just that little something missing. But this is one show that I can watch over and over again, much like my other favourite, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. Even hubby enjoyed the show…I’d originally thought he wouldn’t coz I’d assumed it’ll be a real chick-flick…but it turned out to be more of a chic-flick (pardon the pun) and the both of us couldn’t stop talking about the similarities of Miranda Priestly to that *someone* we know.

If you haven’t watched this show, do put on your Manolos and go buy a ticket quick! I know I’ll definitely be buying the DVD to watch it again.

And dear god…the Malay name for the movie was Boss Dari Neraka (Boss From Hell). At least come up with something better, people!

That’s all.

One thing I absolutely LOATHE about movies in cinemas, the annoying sub-titles done in the worst possible ways. I’ll err… download it. Arrrr =)

Carrot: Nevermind…once the DVD is out, we have another round, k?

Geekchic: Ugh…tell me about it. I hate BM subtitles. The people who do them probably either don’t understand English or BM very well. Or both…hehe…

Siongee: Yeah, I think alot of people loved the movie…everyone I’ve spoken to have glowing reviews about the show!

Kaelyn: Hello woman! Haha…only us ex-colleagues would understand how similar Miranda Priestly and *someone* is!

Something to say?
