After reading Boo_licious’s review on Precious Old China, I decided to try it out one day with some colleagues from work. Didn’t manage to take any photos then, but I went back 2 days later with hubby in tow… :-)

The interior of the restaurant is rather dim, but since we sat near the tinted window, the photos came out pretty ok. The decor is very interesting…they have chandeliers, old cabinets, different types of chairs (including two really huge king-ly ones!)…really, Precious Old China is such an appropriate name!

Anyways, on to the food!

We had Pie Tee (Top Hats - a popular Nyonya dish where little deep fried hollowed ’shells’ in the shape of top hats are served with shredded vege…I think it’s turnips), and Ju Hu Char (cuttlefish with the same shredded vege as the Pie Tee filling)…

and Chicken Kapitan…

and Sago Gula Melaka (which came in a much much bigger bowl than when I had it with the set lunch!)…

The Pie Tee is not bad, at least the top-hats weren’t too oily…but nothing much to shout about. The Ju Hu Char is really nice, especially when it’s eaten together with the lettuce, which was crunchy and not wilted like in some restaurants. The Chicken Kapitan comes with alot of curry sauce which is heavenly when taken with the plain white rice. Best of all, it wasn’t really spicy, so I could really enjoy the dish. And despite being so full, I couldn’t resist ordering the Sago Gula Melaka again as it’s one of the best ones I’ve ever tasted. The chilled coconut cream is thick and smooth, and the sago was just the right consistency, plus the brown sugar was nice and thick. Absolutely yummy. Even hubby abandoned his Pulut Hitam (black glutinous rice) to share my dessert…*grin*

I can’t remember how much the whole meal cost coz hubby paid, but it’s not extremely expensive. The service was abit slow though, probably coz there weren’t enough staff to cater for the lunchtime crowd.

Definitely a place I’ll go back again and again.

Hiya Sooyin. I love their sago gula melaka esp the thick gula melaka syrup and yes, the kari kapitan is yummy - had to stop myself from asking for more rice and carbs. My friends told me I should have ordered Malaccan Nyonya dishes like Devil Curry instead as John Locke the chef is from Malacca. Guess I will have to try it again.
