Serial hairstylist cheater

Mon, 23 Oct 2006, 11:17 pm

Well, that’s what they call it, right? When you change hairstylists? :-)

Since I got back from UK in 2000, I’ve been searching in vain for a hairstylist that could make me look…well, better than decent. Anyways, for the fun of it, I’ve decided to list down the different hair salons that I’ve visited over the past 6 years:

#1: A Cut Above @ Bangsar Shopping Centre - the hair stylist was moody and gay. On some days, he gave me a decent cut, on some days, less than decent. The staff were not friendly, and they treated your hair like they had a personal vendetta against it…yanking and pulling while washing and blow-drying. Frustrated, I decided to move on.

#2: A Cut Above @ Midvalley - the hair stylist was frumpy and so not stylish. Every haircut I got was the same…B.O.R.I.N.G. I suppose I stayed on so long because I liked the manicurist.

#3: Hot Heads @ KL Plaza - Still one of the best ones I’ve been to. Hair stylist was hot hot hot. The staff were friendly and they really really cared for your hair…you can tell when they wash it, they’re oh-so-gentle. My hair got de-virginized here…just 3 days before my wedding, too! I did have one really disastrous cut here though…when I agreed to get a fringe…*shudders*. But anyways, the real reason I left was coz it’s just too far from home.

#4: The Lab @ Desa Sri Hartamas - I love the hair stylist here, and again, they really treat your hair well. The hair treatment is awesome, and the hair stylist recommended a great hair colour for me, which I love till this day. However, I got bored with the same haircut everytime (and I found that he layered my hair too much), and I suppose I was too chicken to speak up and ask for a change. Plus, I didn’t really like the way they blew my hair after each cut…so on impulse (and also hubby’s recommendation), I decided to try…

#5: A Cut Above @ Bangsar Village - …whaddaya know? I’ve come full circle! And for the first time, I got a cut I really liked, and at least it looks different when I walk out of the salon. However, I had to wait 30 minutes for my turn even though I’d already made an appointment, and this lady who came while I was still waiting just waltzed right in, so I blame it on not too good time management. Plus, the staff is still rough when washing your hair and blowdrying (hello…my hair got tangled in the hairdryer a couple of times, k?!?). But the hair stylist did everything right…she gave me a side-swept fringe and a not-too-layered hairstyle that ends just below my shoulder (possibly the shortest I’ve ever gone in the last 15 years)…and I love the way she cut hubby’s hair as well. So looks like this may be a start to a monogamous relationship!

Man, makes me glad i’m a guy. Everytime i go home, i head to the local indian barber.
nothing beats a cheap cut in a dirty, smelly place. and a free neck massage/manipulation too. never mind the inevitable vertebral artery dissection.

went to this salon in DU once. the people there spoke to me in Mandarin! told them i can’t speak Mandarin. stylist said she can’t speak Cantonese. Gosh… lucky it was just a trim.

    tried Peek-A-Boo before?

found my stylist at Russel in 1U. finally!!!!

Vagus: Haha…yes, you guys always have it easy. Especially when choosing clothes to wear to the office…I hate how my hubby can just pull a shirt, pants and tie out, while I’ll be standing in front of the closet for a good 10 minutes trying to mix and match… :-)
Cheekypumpkin: Nope, never tried Peek-A-Boo…are they good? It’s in TTDI, right?

  4. Comment by cheekypumpkin on 24 October 2006 @ 11:56 pm

yup, they’re in TTDI. tried there once. didn’t get the main stylist who is Sean. the waiting list is like long… not sure how they are doing now. there’s another branch at The Curve.

hie, came across this blog randomly, try jade at saw salon, klcc. she is fierce! love love love her. she’s got fantastic ideas and got brilliant technical skills. and what is up complaining about dressing up to work? i find it fun to mix and match rather than just putting on the same shirt and slacks combination (very uniform-like dun u think?). it’s sort of a creative expression since i cant draw or sing or do anything else artistic.

Creativelyrestricted: Ooo…I heard about Saw Salon @ KLCC. Been wanting to try, but it’s kinda far…even more so now since I’m not working in town anymore. Haha…well, dressing up to work is fun if the dress code isn’t so strict, ie. can be abit casual. But wearing suits can be boring, not to mention expensive!

 Wished I had read this site before I went to Saw salon. I just hadf my hair cut on Saturday. I was at KLCC and my long hair was in a mess. When I saw Saw salon, I went in. Since this was the first time I was at KL, I decided to pay EM170 for Edwin to cut, to be on the safe side. The wash was fantastic. But the cut was over in a minute. I really meant it was over in a minute. He simply cut off all my curls. That’s all. Didn’t even let me see how the back of my hair looks and did not check if both side are fine.

I’;; be going to my local salon for some rescue this weekend.

well, i reckon dat u shud hv stated who was da hair stylist. Not all the hair stylists in a saloon r bad/good. A junior stylist may not produce da same outcome as, or better den a senior.

  16. Comment by sooyin on 11 December 2008 @ 9:52 pm

Ben: I usually go for the senior stylist. Just didn’t want to name names…

    Hi Sooyin,

I stumbled into this blog while googling ‘best hairstylist in Malaysia’. Wow.. what a comprehensive summary of the salons. I’ve been salon hopping since forever, never found any that suits me. I’m terribly in need of a good hairstylist as my hair is in mess now. The last I tried was a Korean hairstylist in Mont Kiara.. I’ve read recommendations from the net and gave out a try, but did cry my lung out after that… It was disaster! The main prob is the korean guy cant speak english, and I cant speak Korean

If it’s not too much too ask, can i have the contact no of A Cut above in Bangsar Village and the hairstylist name. I’m heading home end of the month for a short holiday and a new haircut…

    Thanks a bunch!
