Old skool cakes
Hubby and I dropped by at the Ming Tien food court @ Tmn Megah last Sunday evening to ta pau dinner. After ordering Sarawak noodles and satay, we took a walk along the night market situated right outside the food court. Along the way, we stumbled on a stall selling cakes…lots and lots of cakes!

It’s been ages since I’ve eaten cakes like these. These are the type of cakes that you will find in fast-vanishing old bakeries that smell of vanilla essence and buttercream (and have tiny green and white mosaic tiles and cabinets with glass sliding doors where the cakes and buns are kept…oh oh…and tiny brown wooden trays for you to place the cakes you’ve chosen on…). These are the type of cakes that are light and spongy, that comes in a variety of flavours…chocolate, coffee, orange, vanilla, pandan, yam…and usually have a dash of cream sandwiched in between, and generously covered with more cream on top. These cakes, people, are seriously old skool cakes…not easy to find after a certain secret cake chain conquered the KL cake-market!
After finishing dinner at home (plus some deep fried snacks and a bowl of tong sui - gandum, my favourite…hehe…you know what they say about shopping on an empty stomach!), hubby and I settled down on the couch and scoffed down the cakes straight from the box while watching The Covenant (which sucks sucks sucks!). The orange and the chocolate-coffee cake was absolutely wonderful, while the pandan was a bit of a letdown. Still, 2 out of 3 is still good enough! And sometimes, simple is best.
I really wouldn’t mind going to the night market again this Sunday!

Carrot: Hehe…you watch and see lar! Oh, the banner thingy? Yeah, it’s random. Actually, it’s rather funny…it’s supposed to be random, but somehow, it doesn’t work on Firefox, so I’ve been seeing the same banner all the time, and I thought it wasn’t working until I read your comment at work, then I tried going to my site using IE, then only I realized it was changing each time I refreshed the page.
Joe: Oh yes! Angel cake house! They used to have these mini swiss rolls that I absolutely love! What happened to Angel cake house? I don’t recall seeing it around anymore…fond memories, man!

Hi Deion…thanks for your comment. The mini swiss rolls were just plain swiss rolls…I think the last time I ate it was more than 10 years ago!
