Singapore!

Fri, 29 Dec 2006, 08:17 pm

Good food, good shopping, super lousy weather!

singapore06.jpg

New things we found:
1. Azabu Sabo @ Marina Square - a Japanese dessert shop (same floor/wing as Topshop, Zara) that has very nice homemade ice-cream
2. Chocolat Factory @ Vivocity - Yummy chocolates, the Pocket Tubes are extremely addictive…I bought the ones containing orangebits covered with chocolate…almost half the tube is gone!
3. Crocs @ Marina Sq and Vivocity - yes, it’s been around for awhile, but it’s the first time I’ve seen so many people wearing it (in Singapore)! We finally succumbed and bought a pair each. Best of all, they have really cute buttons that you can buy to customize your shoes!
4. SALE! ‘Nuff said.
5. Nokia 7390 - Cheaper in Singapore at $648! But it’s very plasticky :-(
6. Dian Xiao Er @ Marina Square - a restaurant that is famous for it’s herbal duck
7. Muji @ Paragon - minimalist heaven!
8. Ember @ Hotel 1929 - Superb food, excellent service!

Familiar places we visited:
1. Din Tai Fung - Superb xiao long bao
2. Jollibean and PinLe - my fav peanut pancake and soya beancurd. I had one bowl everyday (even ta pau on our last day to eat in the car!)…plain, with barley, with grass jelly…either way, it’s delish!!
3. Tony Romas - PORK ribs *drool*

Piccies!

Went there for lunch last week, was too lazy to blog about it till now! :-)

Ginger is situated in Central Market, next to the food court on the first floor. The restaurant is quite big, and was about quarter-filled when hubby and I arrived at lunch-time.

The menu had a long list of dishes and ala-carte items to choose from…mostly Thai style dishes, I think. I settled on the pineapple fried rice while hubby had fried mee-hoon and we ordered a plate of fried baby kai lan with salted fish to share. While waiting, we were served a bowl of prawn(?) crackers that came with a warm bowl of peanut sauce…very nice!

The service was pretty efficient and our food arrived in no time. The portion was really huge, and best of all, my pineapple fried rice had huge crunchy prawns, and portions of raisins, pineapples, cashew nut and sliced cucumber surrounding the fried rice. Hubby said that his fried noodles were pretty good, and he managed to polish off almost everything on his plate despite the huge portion! As for the baby kai lan, for some reason, the cook decided to add chilli padi (birds eye chilli) to the dish, and it was so spicy! We alerted the waiter, and they took it back to the kitchen and cooked another order for us without the chilli.

We also ordered desserts…Pearl Sago Cendol, which was basically cendol with sago ;-) …and my favourite Thai dessert…water chestnut with jackfruit in coconut milk. Unfortunately, Ginger fell short when it came to their desserts. The coconut milk was extremely diluted, and there was absolutely no taste at all to the dessert! Thumbs up for having lots of jackfruit in my water chestnut dessert though…as most restaurants are very stingy when it comes to the jackfruit!

Hopefully, they’ll improve on their dessert, else we’ll probably have our mains there and hop over to the nearby Precious Old China for their superb Sago Gula Melaka!

Books to keep me company in Singapore

Sat, 23 Dec 2006, 04:08 pm

Stopped by at MPH last night before the movie. Bought these four books, which I’ll be bringing with me to Singapore tomorrow:

1. Mindgame by Yang-May Ooi
mindgame.jpg

In MINDGAME, the career of ambitious young lawyer Fei-Li Qwong looks set to sar as she steers her major clients to the successful launch of their visionary sanitorium. Piers and Ginny Wyndham claim their Centre for Mental Health and Excellence will revolutionise Asia??s health care practices. Fei is proud to be part of the team. But Fei??s professional success masks a turbulent private life as she tries in vain to reconcile her Western education and outlook with the restrictions of life in Kuala Lumpur and the feminine qualities of charm, modesty and family-mindedness demanded of tranditional Asian womanhood. Her problems have only just begun. As she begins to uncover the dark reality behind the Wyndhams?? public front, Fei finds herself drawn deep into a pall of intrigue and murder to a secret experiment that could enslave Asia under a terrifying new tyranny.

2. Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales
angela-carter.jpg

Once upon a time, fairy tales weren’t meant just for children, and neither is Angela Carter’s Book of Fairy Tales. This stunning collection contains lyrical tales, bloody tales, hilariously funny and ripely bawdy stories from countries all around the world from the Arctic to Asia - and no dippy princesses or soppy fairies. Instead we have pretty maids and old crones; crafty women and bad girls, enchantresses and midwives; rascal aunts and odd sisters.

This fabulous celebration of strong minds, low cunning, black arts and dirty tricks could only have been collected by the unique and much-missed Angela Carter.

3. Eragon by Christopher Paolini (hope the book is much better than the sucky movie…so sucky that I’m not even going to bother doing a review!)
eragon.jpg

When Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself.

Overnight his simple life is shattered, and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic, and power. Can Eragon take up the mantle of the legendary Dragon Riders? The fate of the Empire may rest in his hands…

4. Eldest by Christopher Paolini
eldest.jpg

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empier. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn’t sure whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall - one that puts Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king’s dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life…

Ostentatious. “Kwa cheong”. Breasts that jiggle like jelly. Jay Chou looking like the Monkey King. Gong Li with gold talons.

Don’t like the story, maybe it’s too deep for me.

Dubbed in Cantonese, of all things!!

Two guys in front of us talking non-stop. Another man coughing like he was gonna drop dead any moment.

Wasted yet another two hours of my life.

I love the theme song though!
