New Zealand: Day 7

Wed, 13 Dec 2006, 10:28 pm

***Warning: Takes quite some time to load!***

We awoke quite early next day for breakfast (included in our room package). Breakfast consisted of a spread of bread, jam, salami, fruits, cereal…all prepared by the owner of the B&B. I loved this weird fruit that I later found out was called Tamarillo…it looks like a cross between a tomato and an apple, and it’s tart and sweet with seeds like those you find in passionfruits.

Full from breakfast, we walked outside to see a Korean film crew filming at the art centre right opposite our hotel. Hoping for a glimpse of, perhaps, Bae Yong Jun (seriously wishful thinking on my part!!), I joined the crowd that had gathered around, but couldn’t see anyone. We pottered about for awhile when I suddenly saw a limo drive into the art centre parking lot…quickly grabbed my camera and zoom lens and managed to snap a few photos of a guy that looks like the star of the show…hehe…so paparazzi! :-P

Hubby finally managed to pull me away from staring at those cute Korean guys and we headed off to Port Hills, taking the Christchurch Gondola up to the peak. I spent most of the time in the cafe being surrounded by screaming kids and frazzled looking parents while hubby wandered around at the observation deck taking photos of the surrouding area (I’m scared of heights!) before we headed back down.

Drove back to the hotel (the film crew was still there), parked our car and walked to the town centre again in search for lunch. Hubby wanted to try the Asian Food Hall so that’s where we ended up having lunch. I had roast pork and BBQ pork rice…very nice, though the portions were huge, while hubby had…hmmm…I forgot what hubby had! :-P After lunch, we walked along the city mall and Cambridge and Oxford Terrace where all the bars and restaurants are located, took some photos of the Avon River, went into the Arts Centre where we found lots and lots of very nice arts and crafts shops. Didn’t buy anything, though! There was also a candy shop there and we ended up buying Kahlua, Baileys and Manuka Honey fudge…soft, sticky and sweet…yumyum!

We walked back to the hotel to see the film crew STILL around, and I hung around for awhile to watch the filming. Finally, I got bored and joined hubby back in the hotel room. Found out that I could access the free broadband (yay yay!) so I spent some time updating the blog, checking my emails, etc. before taking a short nap.

By the time we awoke, it was dark outside and time to go for dinner. This time, we tried ‘50 On Park’ which was situated close by at The George’s Hotel. I had pan fried groper with crab tortellini and clam boullabise (very nice!) and hubby tried their 3-course dinner which consisted of duck confit, roast lamb and eggnog pannacotta. For dessert, I order the recommended sticky date pudding with hokey pokey ice-cream and grilled bananas with butterscotch sauce…absolutely heavenly! My first time trying sticky date, and I was not disappointed at all. And oh…we both got a cup of mulled wine too! Sweet and warm…just the thing to finish off our meal! Too bad the lighting wasn’t very good for photography, furthermore, the restaurant was so posh that we felt too shy to use the flash!

When we got back to the hotel, the street was literally deserted…so we brought out the tripod, set it up in the middle of Worchester street and started snapping photos…hehe…luckily we didn’t get run over by a tram!! Managed to get several of both of us together by using the timer…that’s the problem with travelling by ourselves with an SLR camera…it’s such a bother to find people to snap photos of us!

And there goes our last night at beautiful Christchurch!
