This restaurant was reviewed by The Star about 2 weeks ago and I’ve been eagerly waiting to try it out. Out of ideas for lunch this morning, I suggested going to Bijou.

img_1028.jpg

Occupying what was formerly Flinders, Bijou is located at Mont Kiara Damai, right below Energy Day Spa. It didn’t look all too fancy from the outside, but I was pleasantly surprised when we stepped into the restaurant. It’s done up mainly in whites, with whitewashed wooden floors and splashes of fuschia. The restaurant is bright and airy, and the tables are spaced far apart, giving it a very relaxed feel…just like a restaurant you would expect to find next to a beach!

img_1020.jpg

The review in The Star did mention that this is a child-friendly restaurant, and true enough, there were quite a few families there with young kids. The widely spaced tables sure gave them plenty of room to run about! :-)

img_1021.jpg

We were shown to a table at the back of the restaurant and given the menus. I immediately zoomed in on the Breadcrumb Pasta, which was also mentioned in the review…I love any pasta that has garlic and prawns and tomatoes…I can never resist trying it out! Hubby originally wanted to try their breakfast menu, but unfortunately, it wasn’t an all-day-thingy, so he settled for Fish and Chips instead.

Our food didn’t take long to arrive, and I eagerly dug into my pasta. It was certainly garlicky enough for me (not recommended on first dates, yah!), and there were plenty of chopped oven dried tomatoes. The portion is just right for lunch, and it doesn’t sit as heavily in the tummy as cream-based pasta.

Hubby’s F&C was apparently made of butterfish, and while the fish itself tasted good, we found the batter to be too thick. It wasn’t all that oily (compared to some restaurants where you can soak up the oil with a paper napkin), but a thinner crust would’ve been nicer.

img_1023.jpg

I wanted to try their desserts, but they only had cakes and muffins (which, by the way, looked extremely pretty sitting on a side table near the entrance of the restaurant), and I actually wanted to try their Pink Berry and Meringue Sundae, but I suppose it’s only available for dinner.

I think this place is great to meet friends as they have a section at the back of the restaurant that can be screened off using fuschia see-through curtains. I can also imagine that it’ll be lovely to have an engagement party or birthday party here…the whites and pinks are a delightful colour combination. Yes *nods head emphatically*…I definitely would love to hold a party here! :-) :-)

While I can’t make much of a conclusion since we only tried two dishes, I would venture to say that the rest of the food is probably good, but not spectacular, but combined with the ambience and the quick and friendly service, it’s a place I would definitely like to come back again…preferably for dinner so that I can try the desserts!

It may be tiny…

Mon, 05 Feb 2007, 10:07 pm

…but it sure packs a punch!

I’m talking about itsy bitsy teeny weeny menthol crystals.

I’m still suffering from blocked ears caused by a blocked nose. Went back to the doctor on Sunday night and he recommended me to buy a packet of menthol crystals from the pharmacy, dissolve some in hot water and basically, just cover my head with a towel and breathe in the steam.

I managed to buy some from a pharmacy on the way back from work this evening, and before taking my bath, I decided to try the steam inhalation. Boiled some water, poured it into a bowl…and stared at my packet of crystals wondering how much to put in. The instruction said two to three crystals.

“But it’s so small…how can three be enough?”

I think I threw in about ten-odd pieces.

It dissolved so quickly in the hot water that before I could even put the towel on my head, the steam hit me and my eyes began tearing like nobody’s business! Every breath I took felt like I was inhaling ice-cold air that went right up my ears and down my throat. Imagine someone shoving a big-ass bottle of Vicks right up your nose…yup, that’s about the same feeling, methinks (minus the pain of a jar of Vicks up your nostril lar)!

I got used to it after a few minutes, though my eyes were still tearing a little bit even though I kept ‘em firmly shut.

Tomorrow night, I think I’ll stick to two pieces.

PS: I found an article on the ‘net that said if you put some pieces near the shower in your bathroom, the steam from a hot shower will also release the menthol!

…to my slowly growing *gulp* La Mer collection:

The Lip Balm

lm_22tk_246.jpg

Thinner than any other area of the face, the lips are virtually defenseless against subtle changes in wind, temperature, dryness, even diet - requiring special attention. The Lip Balm infuses a potent concentration of the original Miracle Brothâ?¢ with marine extracts, botanicals and vitamins to regenerate the delicate lip skin.

This luxurious emulsion works on contact to soften roughness, relieve dryness and flaking and help heal seriously dry lips. A patented Lip Lipid Complex is the first line of defense. It delivers moisture, strengthening the lips’ minimal moisture barrier and helping to prevent further damage. An essential protein found in the arctic helps insulate vulnerable lip skin from extreme conditions of heat and cold. Mint comforts the lips and enhances the balm with a cool, refreshing flavor. Like Crème de la Mer, the results are immediate â?? lips look and feel smoother, softer, plumper â?? yet long lasting.

Don’t know about all the mumbo-jumbo above…but this lip balm smells exactly like After Eight chocolate…seriously minty! I just need a very small amount…warm it up between my fingers and pat onto lips. Lips feel softer and more moisturized immediately after use. And it comes in a flat pot that I can tuck into my small make-up pouch!

The SPF18 Fluid

lm_23r1_246.jpg

Dr. Max Huber understood the power of light. Just as plants need sunlight to thrive, there are energies within the light spectrum necessary for our well-being. Utilizing this principle, The SPF 18 Fluid captures beneficial light while diverting potentially damaging light. Designed for daily use, this water-borne formula absorbs instantly into the skin to provide broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. A trio of natural and sea-derived ingredients uniquely benefit the skin. Gemstones absorb light energy, transforming it into beneficial green light to enhance anti-oxidant activity. Photonic spheres within The SPF 18 Fluid redirect and diffuse light. Smart, light-reactive seaweeds impart natural humectant properties to bind moisture - preventing dehydration. Worn over Crème de la Mer, The SPF 18 Fluid acts as a generator, actually boosting its efficacy.

No conclusion about this yet…I decided to buy this since I’d just finished my Advance Protect Essence UV from SKll, and both of it costs the same price!

We tried this new restaurant at The Curve yesterday. I have a thing for xiao loong bao, and when I saw that this restaurant had so many varieties…well, I just had to try it!

dsc01060.jpg

The restaurant was quite packed, and all the ‘2-pax’ tables inside were taken, so we ended up sitting outside next to the hustle and bustle of the weekend market.

This is what we ordered:

dsc01061.jpg

While waiting, we were served an appetizer of pickled cucumbers…yummy, one of my favourites! This one had sliced garlic in it as well…very nice!

dsc01062.jpg

Our food didn’t take long to arrive:

Here’s the steamed pork with mushrooms (steamed pork with crab roe not shown)…

dsc01066.jpg

…glutinous rice dumplings…

dsc01064.jpg

and fried red bean puff with sesame seeds (I hate sesame seeds…it tastes extremely ‘heaty’ and oily!)

dsc01069.jpg

Sadly, the steamed dumplings were so-so only. The taste was marred by the ’skin’ of the dumpling…it was too thick! I personally still prefer the one at Shanghai 10 by Chef Loong. The glutinous rice dumplings were basically lo mai kai wrapped in the usual dumpling skin…a different presentation from the usual lo mai kai in a bowl, but nothing spectacular. I didn’t like the fried red bean puff…the pastry was too flaky and the red bean paste wasn’t smooth enough.

I don’t think we’ll be going back there again soon…mainly because it’s really REALLY expensive. The food is mediocre, and while I appreciate the skill that goes into making the xiao loong bao (what is it…exactly 18 folds?), the quality of the food doesn’t justify the price.
