The weekend that was
Friday night
Dinner at Maredo’s steakhouse @ Telawi, Bangsar, where I had their marvellous pasta with prawns, mushrooms and beef bacon, while hubby had the Oxtail Stew.
Watched Babel at night…the story is interesting, though abit draggy. I have to agree with most of the reviews…the part of the show that’s set in Tokyo is the most sad and disturbing one among all the others!
Saturday
Had Jackson’s hot dog and chicken burger for lunch…yummy!

This guy has been around for ages…my parents used to buy the hot dogs for me after my swimming lessons at a pool nearby when I was really really young! His hot dogs are seriously old school…buttered bun that’s lightly toasted on the inside, a sausage, cucumber, onions, chilli or tomato sauce and mustard.

Oh, and you can ask for a fried egg to go with your hot dog as well! I haven’t had this in ages, and it still tastes really good! Usually, his stall is located outside his house (it’s actually a van), but I’ve seen him and his van at house parties before. I think he’s been feature in KLUE before as well!

[Edit: I dug out my old issues of KLUE and Jackson's hot dogs were feature in the June 2005 issue. According to the article, he has been around for 43 years...imagine that! The first stall was run by his brother in Taman Jaya, and the current guy picked the business up from him in 1973. Oh, and apparently, the man, Jackson, doesn't really exist...hehe...this guy's name is Han Ah Juan! He and his wife doesn't seem to age at all...they look the same as they used to when I used to eat these hot dogs as a kid!]
Spent the rest of the afternoon lazing around at home…
As for dinner, I&J were down from Ipoh, so we had dinner with them and O&J and their lovely lovely baby, Chloe, at Nong & Jimmys. Between the six of us, we had butter prawns, crabs, two types of vege, a huge plate of fried rice, cockles, BBQ stingray, tomyam soup, and the sinful yau char kway with kaya. The bill came up to RM25 per person…talk about cheap and good food!
After dinner, they adjourned to our place where J had fun taking photos of baby Chloe with our cameras, while I&J had a go at the Wii! Soon, both O&J were also taking turns at the Wii, while I contentedly sat on the couch carrying Chloe…she’s sooooo adorable, I tell ya!
Sunday
Woke up to a rainy rainy Sunday morning…it would’ve been nice to sleep in, but we had planned to have breakfast at Delicious…so off we went! Bought some magazines, sat outside enjoying the cool air, and had our breakfast while listening to the pitter patter of the raindrops.
Spent the afternoon playing Zelda: Twilight Princess, watched a movie (Griffin & Phoenix - typical tearjerker where both protagonists have cancer and fall in love with each other), lazed around and basically wasted the whole day away…*grin*
For dinner, we decided to try a new place called Mama Chops Papa Grills at Alam Suria (it’s opposite Damansara Lagenda, you can see it as you go along the NKVE towards Subang). I think the main branch is in Subang near the old airport (and next to the famous La La Chong), but since this was nearer, we thought…why not give it a try?
The food served there is typical old school chicken/lamb chops, etc. I don’t know how new the place is, but we were the only ones there! The food is so-so only…quite disappointing as I was expecting something along the quality of the food at Ipoh Swimming Club! Hubby had beef soup, while I had mushroom soup in a bun. While the bun was really nice, the soup was way too watery. For mains, hubby ordered…darn…I can’t remember the name of the dish, but it’s fried chicken with gravy together with a sausage and cheese bun thingy and fries, etc. He said it was just ok.

As for myself, I had their chicken chop with garlic mushroom sauce. Sad to say, the chicken was very tough, and the gravy didn’t have much taste…mushroom, garlic or otherwise.

Secret Recipe’s mushroom chicken tastes better…and Secret Recipe’s mushroom chicken ain’t too good to begin with. I would still like to go to the one at Subang to give it another try…hopefully the food tastes better there! Dinner came to RM42…considering the feast we had at Nong & Jimmys for RM25 per pax, this was really not worth the $$$ at all!
And now, it’s Sunday night…and the whole routine of counting down the days to the next weekend begins all over again…
Ok…I’m off to watch Hannibal Rising!
Oh, and for those of you who want to try Jackson’s hot dog, just get to the Rothman’s roundabout (near Lisa de Inn, Greenview) and take the turnoff that leads to Jaya Supermarket (that’s 12 o’ clock if you’re coming from SS2, 9 o’ clock if you’re coming from Sin Chew Jit Poh/Honda service centre). Turn right at the traffic light at Handimart and follow the road all the way. The van is on the left, near house number 144.

i think i have seen that Jackson van around. but never tried before. mama chops and papa grills food so so only. they have been there since that whole area was developed so could be around 2 yrs or less. not that new.
oh….. can’t compare with ISC’s food. over the yrs ISC’s food std is still good.
btw, if u happen to be around DJ area do try the tau foo fah from the mobile van opposite Atria. the giant side. of course not as good as funny mountain.

Looks like a good weekend. Yup, Jackson is really old school. One of those great memories abt school nearby. I ate at Nong and Jimmy - really love their steamed Thai Style fish. The chillies and lime juice really get into the fish making it delicious. Wasn’t too hot abt the yau char kuay and grilled stuff though.

Hey, what a coincidence, we watched Babel yesterday as well. Depressing but great storyline. Talk about seamlessly bringing together the different stories.

Cheekypumpkin: Hey…thanks for the tip! Will keep that in mind the next time I’m around that area…
I heard the rojak there is really good too…must try it one fine day.
Boo_licious: A good and fattening weekend…*grin* Will try the Thai steamed fish next time if I can get hubby to agree to order it…he’s not a big fan of steamed fish, unfortunately!
Belle: Yeah, I like how the different stories tie up, but the Japan one is seriously depressing!

I ate at Mama Chops and Papa Grill in Subang once. It’s near Lala Chong. It isn’t too bad but I think it’s a local franchise so the quality may differ from outlet to outlet. Btw, what your hubby had was Chicken Maryland! I recognised it cos that’s what my bro always orders!

hey how was hannibal rising ?
Comment by cheekypumpkin on 2 April 2007 @ 11:24 pm
yes, the rojak is nice. one of the better ones around. on sunday becoz of the rain the uncle was sooo free. he was wondering where everyone was. people will drive to the stall, order, then make one round since there’s no parking and collect their rojak then.
tried the rojak at the ipoh stadium? the one where u dip the fruits and all into the sauce? yummy!

Pinkelle: Was it Chicken Maryland? I remember it was called some combo combo thingy…
Anyways, ya…maybe we’ll go try the one in Subang one day la. But then again, we might just detour to the very much better La La Chong! *grin*
Carrot: Sucked.
Cheekypumpkin: Nope…haven’t tried the one at Ipoh stadium. Will ask hubby to bring me. I like the one at the coffeeshop that serves really good sar hor fun, though…!
Tsu Lin: Seriously? Ok ok…we go there and ta pau when you’re back!!

G’day Soo Yin,
I’m a hot dog lover & your mention of Jackson’s made my mouth water! Where exactly is his van? If it’s as good as you say it is, I’ll be eternally grateful! Ta!

Garrett: Hiya, thanks for dropping by. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with PJ area, but if you are, the directions for Jackson’s hot dog is:
“Oh, and for those of you who want to try Jackson?ǨѢs hot dog, just get to the Rothman?ǨѢs roundabout (near Lisa de Inn, Greenview) and take the turnoff that leads to Jaya Supermarket (that?ǨѢs 12 o?ǨѢ clock if you?ǨѢre coming from SS2, 9 o?ǨѢ clock if you?ǨѢre coming from Sin Chew Jit Poh/Honda service centre). I’m afraid I don’t have the road name, but will try to scan a map and email it to you soon.

Got it! Thanks! And..er..what time is the van there?
Comment by sooyin on 17 April 2007 @ 1:16 pm
Garrett: Hmmm, I’m not too sure about that. But you can try going on Saturdays around noon…he should be around. I think he actually stays there and just parks his van in front of his house!

Sorry, sooyin.
I know its been long edy. All I need to know is, does Jackson’s Burger operate on weekday?
Thanks allot!

Elaine: Honestly, I’m not too sure if Jackson’s Burger operate on weekdays (I would think he probably does…). Checked my Klue mag which featured him some time ago, the only info I got was that he opens from 11am-5pm, no mention on off days, etc…
