The girl, the old lady and the three…

Tue, 24 Apr 2007, 09:23 pm

…err…bastards?

I was relating this story to hubby today over dinner. It’s one of those test-test thingies where you have to rate the characters in the story. We had to do it this morning at work for some *cough*wasteoftime*cough* stuff.

Anyways, I started my story…

Five people got shipwrecked. A girl, an old lady, the girl’s fiance, the fiance’s best friend and a sailor. The girl, old lady and sailor was stuck on one island. The other two guys were stuck on the other island. The girl, being very worried about her fiance, asked the sailor to repair a small boat (or raft or something or other la) and row her across to the other island so that she can see her fiance. The sailor said he would only do it if she sleeps with him. The girl was very confused and went to ask the old lady for advice. The old lady…

And that’s when hubby unexpectedly interrupted me and said…

“…the old lady said she’ll sleep with him instead?”

I dissolved into laughter and couldn’t continue anymore…

PS: More about what went on with this story thingy at work later…

Online shopping is evil

Mon, 23 Apr 2007, 03:23 pm

Evil evil evil…

I was searching for some information on Aesop products and surfed onto their website. When I finished, I found myself going to Origins. And then Aveda. Then Sephora. And I’m feeling the urge to buy stuff that I would never normally buy. Hair products, face products, body products…all with promises that I will have better skin, gorgeous hair, firm butt…geez louis, which girl wouldn’t want that? Especially on a dreary Monday morning with the whole work week looming ahead (and you KNOW what work and stress will do to your skin!). It’s a subtle whisper in your ear that if you buy that moisturizer, that skin exfoliator, that blusher, it’ll be like carrying around an invisible shield which dirt and tiredness and stress and gasp…horrors of horrors…wrinkles!…cannot penetrate.

Hmm.

Worst of all, online shopping is so darn convenient. Just a hop and a skip and a click away. Read review, add to cart (and add to card), read review, add to cart (and add to card). Typing in your credit card numbers and pressing the “Pay now” seems to carry less financial responsibility than signing the little white slip at the store itself. Of course, there’s no instant gratification, but you can secretly hug yourself in anticipation of the products arriving in just 2-4 weeks time, of opening a brown, nicely packaged box to find a treasure trove of goodies. Best of all, you may sometimes forget that you’ve ordered this or that, and it’s like a free surprise, just that you’ve paid for it much earlier (and of course forgotten till the statement arrives).

But it’s all smoke and mirrors. Coz after it arrives, after you’ve admired every single item, after you’ve started to sparingly use it…you realize that most of these beauty products fail to live up to the promises it made 4 weeks earlier. It works no better than what you already have. And you resign yourself to the fact that you’ve wasted money on yet another product that you’ll probably end up stashing in some dark corner somewhere. And some of you may also have to grit your teeth as that man that just happens to be living in your house gives you a knowing look that spells out “I told you so…” in big bold capital letters. So you promise…no…vow!…that you will never buy anything online again. That you won’t fall for the slick marketing, sleek packaging and glowing reviews (and I don’t only mean skincare…books too!).

For now.

But yet another dreary Monday morning will inevitably come along…and the computer will beckon invitingly…

PS: FYI, I ended up not buying anything on the net after getting distracted trying to finish up this post, but I *did* buy something else during lunch time. Something that has a 3.2MP Carl Zeiss lens…

Buggy bug bug

Sun, 22 Apr 2007, 12:17 pm

Darn it…I just found a bug in my new theme. When I click on any of the categories, clicking the ‘next’ navigation button at the bottom of the page leads me back to the main page, not the next page containing more posts in the same category.

Scratching my head how to fix this now. Pffftt…
