sooyindotcom…now

Mon, 21 May 2007, 07:12 pm

Come July 2006.

I was itching for a change. Two reasons:
1. Movable Type’s incredibly-difficult-to-upgrade platform was really getting on my nerves
2. The domain name ’sooyin.com’ was up for grabs!

Well, ok, three reasons…I’d just quit my job so I had free time on my hands again!

I bought a new hosting plan from Exabytes along with the domain name, and so began my love affair with WordPress and it’s famous 5-minute installation. Installation was a breeze, and while it definitely took longer than 5 minutes, it cost me much less sweat and tears than MT. I was sold!

The very first version of sooyindotcom was based on the K2 0.9.1 theme. It was easy to install and even easier to configure. I liked the cool features that came packaged with it, like the Extended Live Archives plugin, and I stuck with this theme for a grand total of nine months…*clapclap*…

At the beginning of this month, I started feeling rather bored with my two-column theme. Plus, I wanted to upgrade my WordPress installation to the latest version. After a couple of nights of downloading different themes and switching back and forth to find The One, I finally found Skuteczni, a clean one-column theme at Headsetoptions. Anyone who has ever searched long and hard for a theme will tell you that the feeling of finding a theme that you absolutely love (and don’t have to heavily modify) is absolutely fantastic!

Over the past week or so, I’ve spent quite some time adding in new plugins (more about that later) and changing the layout of the theme to what you see today. The top part of the theme has morphed from this…

to this (sideblog and photo at the header has been removed)…

and I also finally decided to get rid of the sidebar that came with the original theme…

and just keep the footer.

A friend once asked if my (then) layout was final? My reply at that time was that I don’t think my layout will ever be final…and I think it’s pretty much the same feeling now. After a week of meddling and muddling in CSS and PHP codes, I’m feeling quite satisfied at the moment. This current layout is more ‘me’ than any of the previous ones, but I’m sure, somewhere down the road, boredom will strike once more…or I might change jobs again…anyone noticing a trend here?? Either way though, the one constant thing you can be sure of is that whatever theme I use, it’ll definitely have at least a little bit of pink in it!
