I dropped by at Allan & Nigel’s new shop yesterday: Just Heavenly Pleasures, located at Damansara Heights. They’ve been opened for close to two weeks now, and I’m sure the local food bloggers have all descended upon them to try out their seriously heavenly (pardon the pun) cakes!

The shop is located opposite Chef & Brew, and you can either buy their cakes to be enjoyed at home, or order their cakes when you dine at Chef & Brew.

Nigel was jaga-ing his shop when I arrived and I got a bear-hug from him… Digressing a little…Allan & Nigel were our wedding planners back in 2002, and they did a great job with our wedding. I especially loved our wedding cake, which was pink (but of course!) and absolutely delicious (chocolate banana…none of that traditional fruit cake thingies for us! ). And whenever possible, I’ve always tried to order hubby’s birthday cakes from them as well…my gesture was not entirely altruistic on my part since I wanted to try their different cakes as well! Anyways, I was really glad to hear that their shop was up and running and their cakes are now so readily available!

Nigel graciously allowed me to snap photos of their delectable cakes in their display chiller (and one of him), so I hope the photos do the cakes, and the man, justice…

As I was planning to drop by at Strands next, I bought four of their cakes to share with Derek and Angeline, and another two for hubby to try at night. I had a lovely time chatting with Nigel and spent about half an hour there before taking my leave.

On the way out, I got so confused over which exit I had to take to go to Desa Sri Hartamas that I circled the area THREE times before following my gut instinct and taking one of the roads leading out the place. Luckily it was the right one, else I’ll be circling that area till god-knows-when…

Later that night, after dinner had settled comfortably in our tummies, I turned to hubby and asked…”Cake cake?” and happily hopped and skipped to the kitchen to get the two cakes that I’d bought…Death By Chocolate (cue Jaws music) and Banana Cream Pie.

While talking to Nigel earlier in the evening, he mentioned that he hoped to get honest reviews/critiques about their cakes so that they would know what can be improved. Well, guys, I’ve gotta say this…both cakes were fantastic!

I’ll start with the Death by Chocolate. Each mouthful was sinful as hell. I could feel the chocolate going straight to my hips, I swear! But it was so darn good that I was savouring every single bite. The one thing about chocolate desserts is that some places tend to make it too sweet. For me, I like a little bitterness to the dessert and this was perfectly balanced. And I tasted something akin to coffee as well (Nigel, correct me if I’m wrong!). If death really tasted this good, the Grim Reaper would be obese by now!

Next…the Banana Cream Pie. I absolutely loved the crust of the pie. It’s thick, but not overly hard (yikes, that sounded abit dodgy!), and it crumbles nicely in your mouth unlike some dessert pies where you actually get the feeling that you might chip your tooth on the rock-hard base! It has a fragrant, buttery, and very very slightly savoury taste, which goes absolutely well with the custard, cream and bananas. My only comment, Nigel, would be the same as the one Boo made, ie. the bananas could be just abit more ripe… Nevertheless, this doesn’t detract from the overall taste of the pie, which is, again…just heavenly!

Please do go and check this place out, people! Not only are you helping to support a home-grown Malaysian company, the standard of the cakes at Just Heavenly Pleasures are really a cut above many cake shops and franchises here in KL.

Oooh.. they all look sinfully delish!

I noticed that there isn’t any place that sells diabetic desserts in KL, maybe you can ask Allan/Nigel if they would consider starting this? The diabetic society in KL is pretty large, thanks to our wonderfully sweet diet!

    Hey Soo Yin

Thanks so much for coming by and trying our cakes. Its so great to see you again and I’m envious of your 50 mm prime. ;-)

Where the Banana Cream Pie is concerned, we took Boo’s comments to heart and have since spoken with out banana/fruit lady in Bangsar. She’s going to try and get us decently ripe bananas which are fragrant but not TOO ripe so they don’t end up being mushy.

One of your friends came along and bought one today too. ;)

    Kelvin? ;-)

Thanks again for the review and we look forward to your other comments on the cakes and desseerts. ;-) Say hi to Eric. :-)

Zewt: Haha…what a small world! Do drop by and give their cakes a try…

Tsu Lin: Hey, that’s a pretty good idea…plus there are many older folks that don’t want that much sugar in their diet as well!

Nigel: Hi hi…thanks for dropping by! Haha…the 50mm prime is considered one of the cheaper lenses. I still want a 35mm 1.4f/L USM Canon lens, though…*grin*

Yup, Kelvin is Eric’s ex-colleague…he’s working nearby in D’sara Heights if I remember correctly. He said the Banana Cream Pie was good, asked me to recommend more…I asked him to give the Death By Chocolate and Chocolate Durian a try…
