Disappearing act

Wed, 27 Jun 2007, 11:32 pm

Just started a new job today (yes…some of you might’ve been wondering why I’ve been so free to blog in the middle of the day, that’s coz I’ve been on a break for the past one month!)…so I’ll be taking a short break from blogging and reading blogs until I get used to the “rhythm” of my new work place.

Yes, the Max! flogger dinner still remains unwritten, photos still unedited…soon, I promise!

A preview of what happened at the floggers meet last Saturday night

Tue, 26 Jun 2007, 12:33 am

Joe’s preview of what the floggers did last Saturday shows a hunka-hunka delicious piece of tuna.

Well, instead of food, I thought I’d put up this picture instead for those who remembers ‘Pink Yoda’…*ahemWMWAllenNigelMavisahem* (apologies beforehand to the die-hard Star Wars fans)…

A make-up and book binge

Mon, 25 Jun 2007, 10:21 pm

*** Taking a break from blogging about food ***

I’d been wanting to get some new make-up stuff and I finally decided to head to Midvalley this afternoon…but not before SMS-ing the make-up guru, Geekchic…”Hey…quick question. Bobbi Brown vs. Shu for eye makeup…what’s yr pick?:-)”

Shu, I was told. So Shu it was!

I spent nearly two hours at the Shu Uemura counter where make-up artist, Kevin, patiently showed me how to apply eye shadow, eye liner and mascara. Yes, I can self-learn how to install and tweak Wordpress plugins, but give me a palatte of eye shadow and an eye liner and I’m as helpless as a lost kitten…*purr*…

Anyways, the result of the Kevin’s hard work resulted in a gaping hole in my wallet.

Here’s what I got:

1. Luminizer
2. Brow pencil
3. Eyeliner
4. Lengthening mascara
5. Four eyeshadows in purple, brown, beige and black and a limited edition case to store said eyeshadows
6. Shu Uemura’s Lavender scented Depsea Water
7. Limited edition lip gloss palette
8. UV Under Base

And while I was there, I dropped by MPH to browse around, and ended up buying a whole stack of books and mags…

As you can see, my reading habits are somewhat varied…

Just Heavenly Pleasures is officially open!

Mon, 25 Jun 2007, 09:47 pm

***** Warning! Photo heavy post! *****

Congratulations, Allan & Nigel!

Just Heavenly Pleasures had it’s official opening ceremony last Saturday at Epicure, Bukit Damansara. I was really looking forward to the event coz it’s a perfect photo opportunity to takes piccies of their lovely cakes, plus I finally get to meet some of the food bloggers!

M & I arrived at Epicure close to 3pm, and there was already a big crowd there. We went into Chef & Brew to say hi to Nigel who was having his lunch, before leaving our bags and a bottle of wine that hubby and I had bought for Allan & Nigel in the shop.

Although it was pretty hot (despite the huge fans), the lovely Citrus Ginger drink that was being served helped quench our thirst…I had three cups! I only managed to sample the mini banana cream pie and chocolate eclair…I was too caught up with taking photos and handing out my Moo cards…

Before I let the pictures do the talking, just wanted to say that it was great to meet…Boolicious from Masak-Masak & Splashie Boy, Jackson from Living in Food Heaven, Joe from Lots of CRaVings & his pretty gf, Nicole, Fatboybakes, WMW, Kenny Mah, Pamela from Foodyumz, Swee San from A Self-proclaimed Foodaholic, Jason from Ipoh Mali, Lyrical Lemongrass & Bald Eagle (who turned out to be my ex-colleague!) and Kampungboy & Citygal…

*phew*

…as well as some non-bloggers! It’s always lovely to make new friends!

I had dinner with M & ES last Friday as hubby had to attend some company dinner thingy. We went to Midvalley as M wanted to get a dress from TopShop, and we decided to try out Isthmus. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Beh, who opened Isthmus of Kra in Melbourne as well as a vegetarian outlet called Shakahari. I was eagerly anticipating a good dinner as I’d read quite alot of good reviews on this place.

We arrived at the restaurant close to 8.30pm. There were still a good number of tables available, and we chose the one next to the glass windows. As we were all pretty hungry, we decided to order the Wow Platter to share first while we contemplate over what we should order for our mains. I finally settled on Poussin “Ayam Sioh” while M and ES ordered the Din-Kum Duck and Spring Chicken Medina respectively.

The starters arrived and we eagerly dug in. The Wow Platter consists of five different starters: Stolich Oyster Shooters, Salmon Gravlax, Lentil As Anything, Simply Avocado & Lotus Blue Dumpling. After reading such good reviews about the Lotus Blue Dumpling, I was really eager to try it out.

Hmmm… :???:

It was really bland, and the dumpling skin was thick and pasty with a slight flour-y aftertaste. Didn’t like it at all.

The rest of the starters (I didn’t try the oysters and the salmon) were so-so only. Nothing special, and it definitely did not ‘Wow’ me.

As for the mains…

ES’s spring chicken and my “Ayam Sioh” was ok. It tasted nice, but that’s about it. Again, nothing really much to shout about.

On to M’s Din-Kum Duck…

Now, this dish has been called ‘utterly delectable’ by a local magazine. I guess they must’ve gone on a good day. The dish that M had on that night should’ve been called “Pepper with duck on the side“. The whole dish was literally liberally (try saying that 20 times!) sprinkled with black pepper. The duck had pepper. The soba had pepper. The sides had pepper. What gives?!? Poor M couldn’t eat most of her dish, it was that bad…

By the time we finished, none of us were really in the mood for dessert. I’m not sure how much the bill came up to as ES paid first, but it should be about RM170+ including tax.

Was the chef having a bad day? Or has the quality dropped? Who knows. The point is that every restaurant has only one chance to make a good impression to their first-time diners. If you dislike the food the very first time you visit a place, it’s highly unlikely you’ll go back when there are so many other restaurants to try out there. And in this case, I doubt any of us would venture back there again.

To be fair, if you haven’t tried Isthmus, do give the other blogger reviews listed below a read before making your own conclusions…
