As much as I wanted to like Sex and the City: The Movie, I came away feeling…rather disgruntled…after watching it. I suppose die hard fans would still love and rave about the movie, but I personally think that they should have left it as a series and ended it there.

Sure, it was nice to see where Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha & Miranda (my least favorite character in the whole series) have ended up four years later, but the movie seemed to have blown their characters into over-the-top caricatures of who they were in the series. Carrie became more whiny, Miranda more irritating, Samantha had too much of her ‘*uck me now’ expression throughout the whole show…the only one that remained likeable was Charlotte. And that was because she looses her cool in the show, else she would’ve been just as prissy as she was in the series. As one critic said:

“[the ladies] have become frozen, Spice Girls-style types - angsty, neurotic, predatory, princess - rather than individuals who might evolve or surprise us”

And the blatant product placements! I’ve read about how over the top it was even before watching the show, but even as prepared as I was (coz I read some early reviews before watching), I couldn’t help rolling my eyes throughout the bridal gown model shoot and that in-your-face iPhone and LV scene.

Ultimately, it feels like they are trying to milk the popularity of the series for all it’s worth while they still can.

It’s a nice enough chic/chick flick for a Sunday afternoon, and as long as you don’t expect this show to recapture the magic of the series like I did, you shouldn’t be too disappointed. As for me, give me Iron Man to watch again and I’ll be a whole lot happier…

OH dear, Soo Yin. Seems like you’ve been having bouts of “bad movie diarrhea”

I don’t usually watch alot of movies (not new ones anyway because I don’t go to the cinema any longer), but that day a friend lent us the DVD “Awake” (starring Jessica Alba) - I was SO blown away. Have you watched it? I think this is one of my favs - a thriller with an interesting twist. Must watch. And of course, blog about what you thought of it.

Carrot: Haha…yes, really…at least for me la! But glad you enjoyed it!

Tsu Lin: LOL…bad movie diarrhea is right! Yup, I’ve watched Awake…hmm…didn’t really like it coz I’m not a big fan of Jessica Alba, and I felt Hayden Christensen was kinda wooden. Talking about thrillers with an interesting twist…have you watched Fracture? Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling…not too bad, that.

I like the show a lot.

Why don’t you check out the movie review before you buy the tickets? You are a good movie critic, you can consider doing it as your side-job.

BTW, I’d like to read your private post. Am I allowed?

Lora: I do (check out the movie review), but like most reviews, it’s subject to the reviewer’s taste, this being a good example, ie. I didn’t like it, but most of you guys did. So I take the reviews with a pinch of salt unless the reviewer’s taste is very similar to mind (ie. bad reviews for shows that I end up hating, and good reviews for shows that I end up loving)…
