Elena - week 16

Wed, 13 May 2009, 09:06 pm

Progress with her fingers at last! She’s finally getting over her ‘fear’ somewhat, and has occasionally reached out to hit her rattle and touch her storybooks. She’s very adept at grabbing my fingers though…I love how she squeezes it so tightly with her teeny tiny fingers (she also grabs my hair and yanks pretty hard…me no likey that… !).

Doesn’t she look like a little boss in this photo? Looks like she’s gonna fire someone (probably me) for not doing a good job…”

As Elena has started to show an interest in books and the TV, hubby and I hunted high and low for a small chair where she can sit comfortably in. My mum saw the Fisher Price Space Saver booster chair at Mom’s Care @ Ikano, but I wanted to hunt around to see if there are other options first before purchasing it. Can you believe it…I went to SIX baby shops at 1U (Mom’s Care branch @ 1U, both branches of Chicco, Mothercare, Bebehaus, JJ’s baby section), and NONE of the shops sell booster chairs. In the end, we drove to Ikano and bought the chair that my mum saw. It’s actually a booster where you can strap onto the chairs at the dining table when baby starts on solids (instead of using a high chair which I’m pretty afraid of coz I’m paranoid that it’ll topple). However, we’re placing it on ground level for the moment so that she can use it as an armchair to watch TV and for us to show her books and flashcards.

Here she is, watching her DVD…

Now that she has her own armchair, I’ve started her on the ‘Your Baby Can Read’ DVD series which I read about at Babylicious’s website (which is a veritable treasure chest of information!). Initially, I expected her to get bored after a few minutes, but surprise surprise…she sat through the whole starter DVD! Since then, I’ve let her watch the show everyday. After three days of watching, I noticed that she would make little sounds or get excited at certain segments…I wonder if it’s because she’s starting to retain information in her head?

I’ve also been the unlucky recipient of many kicks and pinches from her recently. She delights in kicking me in the chest, and the more I pretend to be hurt, the happier she gets… Her fingers are also always on the move, opening and closing, opening and closing, and whenever she can grab any part of my body, be it my neck, face, arm…she’ll give me a nice hard pinch! Unfortunately, my…erm…nipples came in close contact with her fingers recently…she not only pinched, she pulled AND pinched at the same time. Twice. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you…owieee….

Soo Yin - glad to hear that Elena is enjoying “Your Baby can Read” series. Even if you don’t feel that there is any progress, you should keep going with it. One thing I’ve noticed with Gavin is that he would bring up things that I showed him only when he was really little. I thought he wouldn’t remember but he does! They’re learning even when we think they aren’t.

When Gavin was about 6 months, I was in Star bucks. We were waiting for my hot chocolate, so I taught him about coffee beans (they have those raw and roasted coffee beans along the counter). I picked some up and let him smell them. That was the only time I ever talked about them with him. When he was about 1+ and could walk, he asked me to carry him and take him near the coffee beans and he wanted to smell them. I was so surprised that he remembered!

Shen-Li: Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, I think babies absorb alot when they are young…it’s the best time for learning! Elena’s now on Volume 1 of the series, and I’ve also bought the flash cards for her. It’s a great way to entertain her during her waking hours…=)

    Hi Soo Yin,

I also bought ‘Your Baby Can Read’ for my baby and he also seems to get excited at certain segment or I should say when he saw a ‘che che’ (sister). Fainted so small already attracted to opposite sex kekeke

I also bought Brainy Baby series for him but I still think ‘Your Baby Can Read’ is more educational.

Elena looks so cute and comfy in her booster chair ;) Mind to share how much you pay for the booster chair?

Alyce: I’m glad your baby likes the YBCR series too! So far, I’ve tried a few others with Elena (even cartoons) and none of the shows are able to capture her attention like YBCR!

Her booster chair costs about RM300 if I remember correctly. I bought it at Mom’s Care @ Ikano.

Something to say?
