Making the change to cloth diapers? - Part deux

Tue, 09 Jun 2009, 06:05 pm

Making the change to cloth diapers

After much research – reading reviews, forums, checking prices – I’ve finally purchased some cloth diapers to try out!

I first read lots of reviews…

…then I listed down the brands that I wanted to try, as well as the types (AIO & pocket – easier as my mom helps me to change Elena’s diapers as well)…

…then opened several tabs on Firefox to the shops that I was planning to buy from:
1. Mybabypitstop
2. Lil’ Danzell
3. Ezmotherhood
4. Tiny Tapir
5. Mia Bambina
…and compared all the prices…

…and shopped and shopped and shopped!

3 Blueberry Minky Bamboo Velour

3 Bitti D’lish AI2

2 Cushie Tushies AIO

2 BumGenius 3.0

1 Organic BumGenius AIO

1 Grobaby Shell Set

1 Rumparooz G2

1 Dream Eze AIO

1 Large and 1 Regular Wahmies wetbag, some inserts and boosters and wipes and 12 raw silk liners later, my bank account started to take on the appearance of one chicken egg…

OK, perhaps I didn’t purchase ‘some’, I purchased ‘quite a lot’…haha! But compared to the stash that some cloth mamas have, this is nothing (consoling myself and my bank account)!

My Bitti D’lish CDs arrived in the post today, and the rest of the diapers should be coming in the next two days or so. Will post pictures once all the diapers have arrived.

Next…to wash them for the first time, then my darling girl can have her little tushie covered in organic cotton and minky!

Elena - week 20

Tue, 09 Jun 2009, 02:58 pm

My goodness…has it been 20 weeks already?!?

Achievement of the week
Elena flipped from back to front! I put her on her tummy on the bed, and all of a sudden, she just rocked herself a little bit and plop…she was back on her back! She still hasn’t quite gotten the hang of it yet and has since done it only two more times, but boy…was I the proud mama!

Funny story of the week
My mom and I left Elena in the room, asleep, and we went to the kitchen to take our lunch. We lingered over lunch, having a good chat before I went to wash Elena’s bottles and my mom went back to her room to check on Elena (we assumed that she was still asleep as there wasn’t a single peep from her). When I finished, I went over to my mom’s room, only to see her carrying Elena in her arms. When I asked, “Eh, what happened? I thought she was asleep?”, my mom told me that when she peeked through the slightly opened door, the little princess was not only awake, but had her head turned towards the door, her eyes opened wide…with a single tear trickling down the side of her face!!! My mom said she felt soooooo bad she immediately picked her up and carried her. My goodness, when I heard that, even though I didn’t witness it in person, I too felt my throat tighten and my heart break!!!

Feeding
As Elena is now fully on formula, we’ve started giving her a bit of water in between feeds. Considering that she’s usually adverse to new stuff (she can even tell when the bottle teat is new even though it’s the same brand, go figure!), I was surprised to see that she took to drinking plain water really well! Maybe she thinks it’s milk when we offer it to her… ! I don’t give her much, around 2oz throughout the whole day, and I use distilled water (I also use distilled water to make her milk).

As she seems to be on the verge of being able to drink 6oz, I purchased 6 new Evenflo bottles to replace the 5oz Medela ones (along with some other toys, hehe! My excuse was that I needed to make up the RM200 for free shipping… ). However, the medium flow teats that I purchased ended up to be too fast for her, so I’m still searching for Medela slow-flow teats to replace the ones that she’s currently using.

Mommy?
Mommy went a little bit crazy shopping for clothes for…who else? My little princess, of course! Gap & 1Utama had a sale thingy going on where everything in Gap had a 30% discount between 6pm-10pm. I bought several gorgeous dresses for her (some are actually tops for bigger babies but it fits her nicely as a dress, plus, it’s cheaper too!).

And to end this week’s post? How bout a little 18SX photo?

Elena - week 19

Tue, 02 Jun 2009, 07:07 pm

A short one this week as I’ve been busy with a personal project…

Hmm…I wonder if anyone’s watching…

Splish-splash!
Bath time has become flood time. Elena has finally realized the thrill of splashing about in her bathtub, and as a result, I often end up walking out of the bathroom carrying a very happy (but tired) baby but wearing soaking wet clothes! She has a little yellow rubber ducky that I put in her tub when she bathes, and oh dear me…my girl has pretty violent tendencies! Not only does she try to kick the duck (and she actually eyes it before making her move!), if her foot actually makes contact with the bobbing duck, she’ll try to drown it by keeping her foot on it to keep it under the water! Eek!

Can’t.Get.Fingers.In.Mouth.

Feeding
We’ve increased her feed from 4oz to 5oz, but looks like 5oz is no longer enough to keep Elena full either. When we first increased her feed from 4oz to 5oz, we had to split her feed into two parts, as she couldn’t finish 5oz in one go. Nowadays, there are times when she can guzzle down the whole bottle in one go, and still smack her lips for more! What’s more, she cries if we pull out the bottle from her mouth…we have to let her continue sucking until the last drop is gone and she uses her own hand to push it away. Tsk tsk…demanding! And you know the Chinese saying where the more you help, the more a nuisance you become? Well, Elena’s ‘I-want-to-hold-the-bottle’ tendencies has progressed to that stage. I can’t feed her without her fingers curling around the bottle teat and pulling it out every few minutes. Feeding now takes twice as long!

Ahh…there we go…yummy…*giggles*

New trick of the week
She has a newfound fascination with her tongue. She’s smacking her lips and licking it with her tongue, making the funniest noises ever! Wait till I upload the video on YouTube, you’ll see what I mean!

Sniff sniff…smells like milk!

Development
Neck muscles are now stronger and she’s able to keep her head up for a longer period of time. She’s still very content lying on her back though…well, she’ll roll when she’s ready I suppose! Sometimes though, I wonder if she’ll skip the crawling stage altogether as she’s so eager to stand. She particularly loves it when I carry her under her armpits and she gets to stretch her legs and bounce on the bed…I lift her up and down and say ‘Jump jump jump jump’ and she just grins widely in delight!

Ooppss! Caught in the act!

And as you can see…the finger biting saga continues…
