Apple of my eye

Mon, 10 May 2010, 12:07 am

She has grown so incredibly much.

1. Four teeth on the top and four on the bottom and looks like there’s more coming soon.
2. Word recognition - I have to say the ‘Baby Can Read’ series and flashcards have really done their magic. With exception for the animal names where there isn’t a way for her to express her understanding, she can understand and act out almost all the rest of the flashcards… body parts, actions like waving, smiling, kicking and even instructions like ‘touch your hair’, ‘arms up’.
3. She knows her own name and when you call her ‘Elena’, she’ll respond with a soft ‘aiiiii’.
4. Ask her ‘Where is ‘pau-pei’ (precious in Mandarin)?’ and she’ll point to herself.
5. She can identify shapes like triangle, square, circle, heart and star.
6. She can also identify certain colors - when the DVD says red, she’ll turn and look at her Stokke chair coz it’s also red in color.
7. She can do quite a lot of hand actions, and is always more than willing to ‘perform’ whenever you ask her to…this girl loves the attention, that’s for sure!
8. In some of the DVDs, she knows what’s coming next…for example, she’ll signal ‘fish’ when the DVD is still showing ’star’ coz the next slide that’s coming up is actually ‘fish’.
9. She knows how to snap her fingers!
10. Still refuses to hold her milk bottle…sigh.
11. Not very keen on food, though she now has a liking for plain bread.
12. Still cruising, and most of the time, she still prefers to crawl (she crawls ‘upright’ using the palms of her hands and the soles of her feet. Her knees never touches the floor.).
13. She’s getting more and more attached to me which means I can’t even go to the toilet in peace…lol! I actually have to tell her ‘mommy is going to shee-shee’ (pee in Mandarin slang) and she’ll crawl after me and sit outside the toilet going ’sheeeeee sheeeeee sheeeeee’…
14. She loves going out and will get my mum to take her little ‘handbag’ (it’s a small black bag that my parents use to carry her napkin and water bottle whenever they take her out) for her and kick her legs and point her finger towards the door!
15. From not wanting to sit in the car seat when she was really young, she’s now a little angel whenever we bring her out. I don’t know if it’s because she prefers the front-facing Recaro seat vs. the Maxi-Cosi bucket seat…but I’m not questioning my good fortune!

She’s a really happy baby and hardly throws temper tantrums for no reason. However, she IS very hot-tempered when she doesn’t get her way, and one thing I’ve learned is that I can’t go head-to-head with her…if she’s holding something and doesn’t want to give it to me, prying it out of her hands will cause a full-blown waterworks scene. The trick is always to distract her with something else, although it doesn’t work every time!

Honestly, there’s nothing more heartwarming than to see her crawl over to me, grab my legs, pull herself up and ask to be carried. And nothing more satisfying than feeling her weight in my arms, her head on my shoulder and one hand clutching my arm as I rock her to sleep.

Updates!

Wed, 05 May 2010, 12:33 am

A huge apology to those of you who have been waiting for updates…I know I’ve been sadly neglecting this blog for a very long time now.

The past few months have been so busy and Elena has developed so fast that it’s almost impossible to keep up. So since pictures speak a thousand words, videos may help to speak a couple more…*grin*.

Some of you may have seen this on my Facebook page, but I’m putting the videos up here for those who would like to see how much Elena has grown! =)

This was taken at the end of February:

This was taken at the beginning of March:

And all of these were taken just a few days ago:

…and my absolute favourite one:

Elena - week 33

Wed, 09 Sep 2009, 11:35 pm

Elena was with us for 3 lovely days over the long Merdeka weekend. She was such an angel…so well behaved!

Foodwise, I made potato, broccoli and pumpkin for her this week, and I also let her try some mashed bananas as well as steamed apple. She made a funny face the first time she tasted the banana, but probably decided that she liked it as she leaned forward eagerly to eat more when I put the spoon in front of her. She’s eating more now, but still not enough to be called a full meal…I really wonder when we’ll be able to reach that milestone!

When she’s not in the mood to eat, however, nothing we do can make her open her mouth. One day, she was in exactly this sort of mood. We thought that switching on her favourite DVD (Your Baby Can Read series) would keep her entertained (and somewhat distracted)…but no! She usually laughs with her mouth open when she watches the DVD, but this time…she smiled with her lips closed so we couldn’t sneakily stuff her food into her mouth… *hits forehead* My mom switched off the TV when she still refused to eat, and you know what she did? She threw a temper tantrum and absolutely refused to look at my parents. I was torn between amusement and horror (that a 7.5 mth old baby can actually merajuk) when I heard it.

Luckily, she seems to enjoy sitting in her Stokke chair now that we’ve removed the harness. I found that if I push the chair right up to the dining table, the harness isn’t really necessary. She’s quite content to sit in her chair, banging away on her tray while we grab a quick lunch or dinner.

Development wise…well, she’s now able to ‘crawl’…backwards! She moves pretty fast and I’m just wondering when she’ll start to go forwards coz when we put her in her cot, she’ll shuffle backwards till she hits the end of the cot and then she’ll start complaining (read: crying) coz she can’t move anymore. She doesn’t seem too inclined to flip from tummy to back either…very strange indeed!

I finally managed to decorate the walls of her room during the weekday and hang up the lamp that I bought for her room. She was fascinated with the hanging lamp when I brought her into her room (ok, future room… ) as it would sway when the fan is switched on. As of now, the room is still devoid of furniture as I’m waiting for Ikea’s new catalogue to come out.

All in all, it was a perfect long weekend!

Elena - week 32

Sun, 06 Sep 2009, 12:20 pm

I cooked cauliflower for Elena to try this week. She’s eating a bit more now compared to when we first started, but surprisingly, she doesn’t seem to have much of an interest in food…she eats as if she was being forced to!

We had a good weekend spending time with her. Going to sleep with her by my side and waking up with her snuggled against my pillow was heavenly. She’s still monopolizing the bed…in fact, she kept coming closer and closer to me that I was left with literally a sliver of space right at the edge of the bed!

We put her in her Stokke chair for the first time this week. It wasn’t easy getting her in, especially with the harness attached. I had to make some minor adjustments with regards to the height of the footrest too…my initial estimate was too low. Elena sat in the chair for awhile, but in the end, she still struggled against the restraints and we had to carry her out. Look like it’ll take some time before she gets used to it.

I finally had time to take more photos of her this week. The great thing about taking Elena’s photos is that she’ll make eye contact with the camera lens which means I’m able to get some nice face shots. The bad thing? She moves so much and so fast that many of my shots are blurry! Since the photos are usually taken in the room, I don’t have very good natural lighting and have to rely on using a slower shutter speed. Still, I did get some nice shots and here are some of my favs (the rest are all on FB)…

This is one of my favourite pics of her…she looks so relaxed and happy…

Future gymnast…
