As much as I wanted to like Sex and the City: The Movie, I came away feeling…rather disgruntled…after watching it. I suppose die hard fans would still love and rave about the movie, but I personally think that they should have left it as a series and ended it there.

Sure, it was nice to see where Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha & Miranda (my least favorite character in the whole series) have ended up four years later, but the movie seemed to have blown their characters into over-the-top caricatures of who they were in the series. Carrie became more whiny, Miranda more irritating, Samantha had too much of her ‘*uck me now’ expression throughout the whole show…the only one that remained likeable was Charlotte. And that was because she looses her cool in the show, else she would’ve been just as prissy as she was in the series. As one critic said:

“[the ladies] have become frozen, Spice Girls-style types - angsty, neurotic, predatory, princess - rather than individuals who might evolve or surprise us”

And the blatant product placements! I’ve read about how over the top it was even before watching the show, but even as prepared as I was (coz I read some early reviews before watching), I couldn’t help rolling my eyes throughout the bridal gown model shoot and that in-your-face iPhone and LV scene.

Ultimately, it feels like they are trying to milk the popularity of the series for all it’s worth while they still can.

It’s a nice enough chic/chick flick for a Sunday afternoon, and as long as you don’t expect this show to recapture the magic of the series like I did, you shouldn’t be too disappointed. As for me, give me Iron Man to watch again and I’ll be a whole lot happier…

Oh dear god just put me out of my misery. Yes, the reviews were right…this movie STINKS. They should’ve just buried it with Imhotep in Mummy 2 and let it rot.

The storyline sucked. There were inconsistencies throughout the story…example, did someone shave Emperor Han before putting him in his clay Russian doll thingy? Coz he had a beard before dying and he came back all clean shaven and such.

The CGI sucked. Just look at the yeti…so fake they would’ve probably achieved similar or better results with extras hiding inside costumes.

Luke Ford sucked…he is as irritating as young Alex from Mummy 2. Even worse coz now we have to contend with his smug mug.

And Maria Bello DEFINITELY sucked. Not only did she have no chemistry whatsoever with Brendan Fraser, she looked like his mother and she totally totally ruined the character of Evie Carnahan.

Rachel Weisz was one smart cookie for spotting ‘problems with the script’ and declining to rejoin the cast in this Mummy outing.

According to Wiki:

Actress Maria Bello stated in an interview that another Mummy film will “absolutely” be made, and that she has already signed on. Actor Luke Ford is signed on for a total of three films. Bello even hinted the fourth may be in South America, keeping with Jonathan’s move to Peru at the end.

Well, we can expect at least a fourth stinking sinking rotting sequel then.

That bad?

When you read reviews of a movie you’re about to watch that goes:

“like an Indiana Jones movie without rhythm, wit or personality, just a desperate, headlong pace.”

“boredom is the very basis of this sequel.”

“just freakin’ awful.”

“I’m afraid it just stinks.”

…it makes you feel like forgoing the tickets and just staying home. Unfortunately, tickets have already been booked and paid for…

A movie review rundown (and my dua sen)

Wed, 30 Jul 2008, 02:06 pm

A list of movies that I’ve watched this year in no particular order…

Edit: I forgot about Made Of Honour!
As much of a fan of Patrick Dempsey as I am, I would be lying through my teeth if I said this was good. Sure, he’s really yummy eye candy but geez…the show was pretty sad, yes? A poor man’s version of My Best Friend’s Wedding (and even the eye candy couldn’t match up to the perfect comedic timing of George, played by suave Rupert Everett). And me no likey Michelle Monaghan either.

The Dark Knight
Nice, but I really don’t think it’s as great as (almost) everyone claims. Great story line, loved the Joker, hated Batman’s fake gravelly voice, hated Rachel Dawes/Maggie Gyllenhaal (she looks so old), wonder if the bombs in the ferry were really wired to blow up the other ferry or the same ferry the people who made the decision were on…hmmm…that would’ve been an interesting twist. Out of all of Christopher Nolan’s films, The Prestige remains my firm favourite.

X-Files: I Want To Believe
Oh my god, just rename it to X-Files: The Mulder & Scully love story. It was a total waste of 2 hours. Sucked big time. For something more interesting, go download these radio episodes (we were faithful listeners when we were in UK): The X-Fools…it’s a whole lot more entertaining!

27 Dresses
Two people I find highly overrated and overhyped (two because that’s all I can think of at the moment) - Ribena Rihanna….and Katherine Heigl. Never liked her in GA, didn’t like her here either.

The Other Boleyn Girl
The book was way better. Natalie Portman, as much as I like her, did not do justice to Anne Boleyn’s character at all. For a much better potrayal, watch Natalie Dormer in The Tudors. And wasn’t King Henry VIII supposed to be blond?

Iron Man
One of my favourites this year. Robert Downey Jr/Tony Stark is the man all girls want to be with and all guys want to be. So hawt!

The Incredible Hulk
Another favourite. Edward Norton as Dr. Bruce Banner/the Hulk really made me feel for the character. And I love love love the ending.

Hancock
Interesting, but not great. Will Smith and his pursed pouting lips didn’t do it for me. Quite an unexpected twist in the middle of the show though!

21
Boring.

Wanted
Angelina Jolie in her usual hot sexy bad girl role…yawn. But that car chase scene, and James McAvoy? Phwoaaarr! That show made me wanna learn to curve a bullet (although hubby commented he doubts I can even shoot straight in the first place).

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Yawn.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Indy is back! Yay! But Mutt is irritating, and did they accidentally wander on to the X-Files set at the end?!? Totally spoilt the story, sigh.

The Happening
OMG, this was one of the worst shows ever that I’ve watched this year. M. Night Shyamalan is, imho, a one hit wonder. It was downhill all the way after The Sixth Sense. And Mark Wahlberg has just proven, in this show, that he can’t act. He’s more wooden than a tree.

Two shows that I’m eagerly awaiting:
Australia & Time Traveler’s Wife. Baz Luhrmann & Nicole Kidman & Hugh Jackman - sounds like a movie marriage made in heaven. And Time Traveler’s Wife is a film adaptation of one of my favourite books of all time. I have my reservations about Eric Bana playing Henry DeTamble, mainly because I haven’t seen Eric Bana in any really good movies. Really have my fingers and toes crossed that they don’t screw this one up (ala PS I Love You gag gag and The Other Boleyn Girl).

PS they totally butchered this show

Sun, 22 Jun 2008, 07:18 pm

Even though my website is still in a mess (categories, my categories are all gone!), I just HAVE to get this off my chest.

Out of sheer boredom and desperation, I finally caved in and watched PS I Love You last night. I’d originally refused to watch it because I think Hilary Swank is nowhere close to how I picture Holly Kennedy to be, and well, ever since Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, I’ve always thought of her as a man.

Anyhoo, I watched it…and obviously, from this post’s title, totally hated it. Why?

The story was changed so much it’s like it’s taken from an entirely new book! It’s set in New York. Holly’s brothers were dropped from the story. Holly’s father became a man who abandoned his wife and kids. Ciara looks ridiculous. Their holiday to Spain became a holiday to Ireland. Holly becomes a shoe designer. The letters are delivered in ridiculous ways, including…from a singing leprechaun! Her mom owns a pub, and Daniel works in that pub. And what’s with that ridiculous singing scene in Holly’s apartment? And who came up with this William character?!? It’s like everything that they could change from the book, they did! They should’ve just called it Oh we lost the book so we’ll make up the story as we go along. PS, I love you. And let’s not get me started on Hilary Swank and her wide-toothed, annoying smile…my goodness, she and Ben Affleck have that same cheesy, irritating Captain America smile. I wonder what would their kids look like. But I digress.

The only thing I liked about the show were Holly’s cute outfits.

Granted, the book was not a Pulitzer prize winner, but it sure was a hell lot better than the movie. It just irritates me when they make a movie out of a good book and spoil everything in the process. Let’s just hope The Time Traveler’s Wife fares much better than this one.
