Sliding Doors

sliding doors

Does anyone remember watching this movie? I *think* I watched it when I was still in UK and absolutely fell in love with John Hannah’s character. The reason why I suddenly remembered this show was coz I watched ‘The Full Monty’ on Astro two nights ago (another show that I absolutely love!), and the British accent just somehow reminded me of Sliding Doors.

I’m now really really yearning to watch this movie again…so much so that I’ll probably order it from Amazon if I can’t find it here…

harry potter and the order of the phoenix

I was all hyped up about watching this movie and was really excited when last Friday finally arrived. I managed to leave work at 6.30pm and reached home to find that hubby had just arrived at the same time!

We had a quick dinner at Mark’s Assam Laksa before heading up to the cinema at 9pm. After patiently waiting for all the adverts to be aired (I absolutely HATE the Chicken Rice Shop advert, it’s bl**dy irritating), I settled down happily in my seat as the lights dimmed.

When the familiar theme song began playing, I literally felt a thrill of excitement…there’s nothing better than to see the characters of a book you love come to life!

Now, I’m assuming that most people would’ve read the book before, so there’s not much point elaborating on the storyline, and it’s not like there are any spoiler alerts…*grin* As far as the movie goes, of course alot of details that were in the book were left out in the movie though it didn’t irritate me as much as I thought it would.

Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge was absolutely perfect. I wanted to slap her when I read the book, and I really really wanted to punch her when I watched the movie. God, that woman is Irritating. Yes, capital I. Staunton had that part down pat, I tell you…with that irritating laugh and fake smiley smiley face! And pink! Pink! That’s my colour! The shame…

I also liked Evanna Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood. Apparently, she’s a big fan of Harry Potter and really studied the role before auditioning, and I think she was great in the movie. She had that perfect balance of quirkiness and innocence without appearing too loony…just a little spaced-out at times and extremely loveable. It’s a pity the later books do not feature her much, it would be nice to see more of her in the next two movies.

Personally, I think this movie was much better than Goblet of Fire, although the fight scene at the Ministry of Magic didn’t really play out as I’d imagined it in my head when I read the book. Still, being a HP fan, it’s one of those movies I’ll be willing to spend time to watching again. I’m already quite tempted to re-watch the first three!

***************************************************************

On the way back home, I was still quite hyper after watching the show that I was waving my hands about in the car exclaiming, “Expecto Patronum!” …”Expelliarmus!!”…”Stupefy!!!”…

…until hubby turned and dryly asked me…”Do you need a wand?”

To which I happily replied, “Ok, I want one with unicorn hair…”

To which he replied, “Ok, find me a unicorn…”

-silence-

die hard 4.0

A bald Bruce Willis is infinitely sexier than a balding Bruce Willis…

I absolutely loved the action scenes in this movie. Cars flying, bullets everywhere, doomsday scenario…more, gimme more!!!

In shows such as these, you’d expect the storyline to be rather weak, and yes, it was. I think the storyline has been reused so many times in so many different movies that it’s one of the ’standard’ ingredients of an action-packed-save-the-world movie. Bad but smart guy wants to teach someone a lesson cause he’s been wronged in the past, but he means no harm, everything is irreversible. Normal average guy comes along, just happens to get involved, is pretty much invincible, happens to piss off bad guy. Throw in some geeks and a token foreign bad-ass chick. Throw in some family members. Halfway through the show, bad guy gets personal. Good guy gets personal. Bang bang bang…world saved. Sigh of relief.

But then again, who watches these shows for the storyline? I just wanted to see cars flying and highways collapsing and I got my money’s worth…yippee-ki-yay!

transformers

I know, I know…many people loved this movie, it got good ratings, etc. But while I did grow up watching the cartoon series, and I even had Optimus Prime as a toy (even though I really really wanted the much cooler Megatron which could turn himself…itself?…into a gun)…I didn’t find this to be a fantastic 6-out-of-5-stars movie. It was fun, yes. It was entertaining, yes. It was loud, yes. But not that great.

Don’t stomp on me, ya.

I found the ending to be really weak, and the fight scene between Prime and Megatron ended very very abruptly…quite an anticlimax. The graphics were lovely though, I loved how they changed from cars to robots, that was absolutely cool. Not too bothered with Bumblebee being a Camaro vs. a Beetle…didn’t even know he (it?) was a Beetle in the cartoon…haha…comes to show how much I actually know about this show!

All in all, an entertaining show, though not one that I would watch again and again.
